First big Effer in Ontario

Nice looking truck!

Why don't k booms need to be leveled like stick booms do?

They do need to be leveled. The kbooms use stabilizers instead of outriggers like a stick boom or a crane.

The picture above looked like it was out of level with all wheels on the ground, and I would swear I've seen them set up out of level in pictures. But you guys would know.

Whats the difference between stabilizers and outriggers?

Stabilizers = wheels on the ground
Outriggers = wheels off the ground

Then what's the hydraulic vertical outrigger on so many cranes front bumpers called CTM?

the front verticle cylinder on truck cranes is called a stabilizer because thats what it is. it is not designed to lift or level the crane and its hydraulic system pressure is reduced so it can't. its sole purpose is to provide a 360 chart with no reductions due to the weight of the engine, cab, etc. ahead of the front outriggers. without a stabilizer, their effective weight would work against the reactive forces of the cranes counterweight, thus reducing capacity when lifting over the front quadrant.

As far as the level goes. Most cranes need to be with in 1 degree of level to be good with the chart. I dont know about other kbooms but Effer can be with in 5 degrees. The main problen with cranes being out of level is side loading when rotating. They are supposed to have the tires on the ground but if the terrain is way out of level dunnage can be used under them.

Great pics looks like a nice unit!

Yeah I work in steep driveways all the time without cribbing under the lower axles of the truck......but I wouldn't do this on other cranes. It also helps to bring the radius in as much as possible (the extensions move so fast this only takes a couple seconds more per pick) to reduce side loading moment.
CONGRATS' 4SGUMP!!!

Hey nice kboom! What kind of qualifications do you need to run that in ontario? Is it different from any other crane?

A 0-8 ton licence will get you by most MoL inspectors, but if you're gonna be running something of any real size you should really try to get a 15 ton or red seal licence, because its only a matter of time before the regulations catch up with the equipment.
