Fir, root-fail

Thanks a lot. Posting the thread was almost as much work as the tree....so its nice to hear some acknowledgment from fellow treemen. Cheers

Jon, I've never walked away from a tree. At least, not for long without coming back with a plan. Without the big tree for support, I'm not sure anything else around would cut the mustard. So what I saw was to either come through the property at the back with a big winch or machine, sling it low down and just pull it back with no sawing involved. Or guy both trees and fall them sideways down the creek at the same time. Either way would involve collateral damage, but not to the house. The second would be the more dangerous, but doable.

Ward, a winch would've been faster no doubt...but we did ok, and it was easy to get equal tension on the two main support lines using the 5:1 on both. I was happy with having 2 big chunks of steel strapped to the tree as opposed to an expensive winch like the GRCS. It was quite the progressive taper where the bollards were attached to the old fir. Obviously we couldn't cut in and a couple of times we had to re-tighten.

Nice reg, always enjoy your photos.

Ben, utility buckets have winches for lifting poles, wires, transformers. Check it out next time you see them working roadside.

Very professional Reg.
I hated it when I had to reset the rigging line between cuts. Occasionally had to have a "hold" line to keep the limb or spar from moving between re-sets.
Keep up the outstanding posts.
