Figure 8

When doing predictable controled rigging how big do you go on a figure 8?

I know it's rated for 10,000 lbs but does 2,000 lbs seem like a good place to stop?

The breaking strength may be 10k but you'd be hard pressed to hold a load of 2k# without more friction even with a large F8

Go to gary Storrick's site called 'vertical devices' and learn more about friction devices

F8s cause the rope to hocklemtoo much for me

I find the heat buildup in a F8 is significant, from even a light load (moi) making a descent at moderate speed from heights under 60'.

The only thing I ever use an 8 for is a but tie when I am running a tip tie also. It works great for this cause you can stop the potential swing then let the rope run till the piece is under the tip. After that just pop the rope out of the 8 and the rope is now a tag line. Or maybe to control the descent of a speed line. Besides small limbs that someone can just hold and lower I always use the porty never the 8.

i used to use a figure 8 for anything i would put on sampson true blue rigging line. if i was going to need more friction i would just set the 8 on the opposite side of the tree as the block or go off another tree. since then have upgraded my rigging gear but i had no problem doing that for removals. although using a port a wrap type lowering device gives you better control
