Favorite methods for through-cable hole alignment

I've been told a clinometer is a good way. I'm about to do my first through cable job and have been pondering this question a lot lately.

Ahhhh...good one!

Look on your phone. You might have a level that could be used

Besides the level you could use the compass to take a bearing on the second hole

Slip a dowel or through bolt in the first hole to set the level then sight across to the second

I just tried a small magnetic torpedo level stuck onto a cheap metal laser pointer. I had to work a few different long spans on a wide spreading multi-stem red maple. Worked pretty good.

Laser dot mounted on a drill. Custom made mount mounted on a Milwaukee drill works on straight and right angle drill heads. Laser is $20 green dot specified as less than 5 mw. No problem in bright sunlight. I would get a 1 mw If I purchased another as the 5 is a little too strong.

Perfectly aligned? My eyeball.

I recall reading about a contraption that used an air drill and an apparatus that held the drill and line going to the opposite stem also with a drill holder thing a ma jig. Strap on the drill holder thingy loosely run the line and pull tight there by aligning the the drill holders. I don’t think I have seen it since. Maybe Jomo’s brain child it’s been a few years.

I typically just a rope a little above the area to be drilled. This can serve a double purpose to tension the cable but I hold the drill bit under and sight parallel to the rope.
The issues I’ve had is brace rods above the union. Can’t see how a laser would help at all with that.

Over the summer TCI magazine had an article which described a jig the author created specifically for drilling holes in alignment.
