Over the summer TCI magazine had an article which described a jig the author created specifically for drilling holes in alignment.I typically just a rope a little above the area to be drilled. This can serve a double purpose to tension the cable but I hold the drill bit under and sight parallel to the rope.
The issues I’ve had is brace rods above the union. Can’t see how a laser would help at all with that.
