Failing black locust

Gotcha, could see you were ready for it by the nibbling of the hinge, just a good situation to chat on. Locust can tear nicely which is good for dampening the load, but it then brush is forward. Takes more time, but lift and drop could be set for the butt to be aimed at the chipper. Tying closer to the notch can add more control. Not knocking you, just talking options and preference.

Oh definitely! No worries knock away if deserved, I definitely should have taken it in two, I was trying to see how big I could get away with taking stuff haha, the mid tie was to try to keep the piece up higher to float over the two guy lines, still didn't work out and got hung up but that's tree work, we readjusted our strategy afterwards and takes to a neighbor about using their yard as a LZ and that worked much better

Once again I appreciate your honest response. Don't think you were going to knock that away, that butt came in hard, just got lucky. Serf Life already made good points. I would add though, just like the last video your groundie on the rope kind of blew it. He or she held the rope tight as you were " nibbling" at the hinge, would be best to let out some slack to help the branch start to hinge then just enough to keep the butt from coming in on you. Question, were you leaving branches below the ones you were removing to protect the other tree? If so, then tip tie and lift so they don't keep getting stuck. Any how just observations, looked like a weird tree and from a video I cant see everything. Thanks for the video and willingness to engage.

Nice work Sgfinco. I really dig your vids bro. Concerning the limb in question I agree that your mid-tie was the biggest issue. I think a proper tip tie, some pretension, a little lift, and a proper slice cut, causing the butt to drop like a stone would have served you well. In the end the limb was a minor snafu and it appears you were anticipating the possibility that the butt might come at you.

Oh yeah there was definitely no way I was knocking that away, contracting you tend to rely more on your positioning and anticipation than your groundies because there's always at least one improper rig. I kept my body protected by the stem and my head was on a swivel ready for the butt to potentially jump back. The mid tie was an attempt to keep the limb high enough to float over the guy lines but I got greedy took the piece to big and I should have tip ties the speed line and butt tied the rig line and taken it in two pieces. This is the main reason I like filming jobs, getting critique and watching each rig to see what can be done better. I was leaving the lower limbs to focus on getting the top out ASAP as the wind was starting to pick up and I wanted to mitigate as much risk as possible. Thanks for your input bud!

Agreed, we already had both GRCS's employed in guying the tree back, lots of different options I should have taken looking back. I've only got 7 years climbing so there's always something to improve on from every job. I appreciate your input and the fact that you dig my videos is a huge compliment. If I ever become a YouTube "hero" you let me know and I'll book a flight to come to California to get my ass kicked!

You'd fit right in buddy. You would be surprised how easy the Reds and Firs are to work with.
