Ever footlocked with a hoover on your back?

Thats a joke right jelte,

I'm a member of the KPB dutch ISA chapter and a member of jeltes leading men.
I've vacuumed caterpillars from trees to. It worked well but the next year they were back in greater numbers so we had to start all over again.

About the leaves they were sucked off but not in great numbers so we thought that if wouldn't hurt the tree. the bugs were gone so the job was done.

hey dutch monkey....

that was just a joke :) but for you i'm willing to make an acception /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif
(which leading man are you then??) of in andere woorden wie ben jij?

Tom, a college of mine uses a spray system against the little critters, when they eat this stuff they crystalise from the inside out. Seems to work well 80-90% succsess rate.

possibly Bacillus thuringiensis (var. Kurstaki?, Israelensis?) I was under the impression that BTk was more like an influenza for caterpillers, they ingest some of the foliage that has the BTk upon it , they get a bit sick and die over a few days. all in all as long as the little buggers are eliminated it doesnt really matter .

B. thuringiensis spp. (strains):
aizawai => wax moth larva control bacterium.
israelensis => fly larva control bacterium.
kurstaki => caterpillar larva control bacterium.
san diego or tenebrionis => leaf beetle control bacterium

From a CA ANR document:
"A Bt protein crystal destroys the insects guts" ...
"... infected insects become lethargic, stop feeding and excrete
liquid."

Bt may be effective for control but as I understand it,
application timing and spray coverage are important and the
bacterium needs to be eaten to work. A vacuum might work
better in case of infestation.

I have a microscope slide of the stuff somewhere...

That's great Mark! Let's make it as hard as possible!
Why didn't you just pull the hoover up on your access line after footlocking up?

Peace and flexability!

GlenR
