What do you guys think about this split?

What do you do when you have to climb a tree with a split in determining if there is a risk for it barber chairing or splitting while you’re working?2E2ACBA3-EE70-499E-AC2C-353357527239.webp2E147B2F-F6FB-4C45-82AE-CF2F05DFAA67.webpb2E147B2F-F6FB-4C45-82AE-CF2F05DFAA67.webp

That is a strange wound. Why does it not extend upward? Did someone just gouge the trunk with a saw?
It looks like it has been there for a while, it looks like it is in some sort of Acer (splitty wood), and it looks like it doesn't extend to the branch union.
I'd sound it all out and probably climb it with no worries. It just really doesn't look like the tree was trying to fall apart, unless there is more to see than what we have. Is the wound on the other side of the trunk as well?

Maple root flares are always so ugly.

That’s the most noticeable split ya not sure how it happened.

It’s probably been there for a while and nobody noticed it

Something physically wounded the tree - pretty small area. Lots of wound wood there. I'd also sound it, but I don't see anything in that picture that makes me think there is an increased risk of failure.

Not what I'd call a split.

What can you put into the hole (can you shove a probe/ re-bar in)?

That's not going to be a barberchair hazard that I can see from Limited pictures of the tree. More picture= better input. Don't put that part in your hinge.
