Ergonomics

Ok I geuss I am in enough pain to take this thread a bit more seriously. The cumulative effect of years of "Task Performing" as one of my mentors, Tim Johnson calls our work, has taken a toll. My pain is in my hip/arse on the left side. It does not feel like a muscle nor does it feel like my lower back. Its originating deep in my hip somewhere. Today I walked off my best friends job(leaving them in a very flucked up situation) due to my "pain"
No Insurance
No way I can work unless this goes away, and its not.
1 month emergency fund in bank.

Shiot! what the hell do I do.
A TIME MACHINE!!! THATS IT!
Ill be in the shop...

I am looking forward to that article Laz.
Keep up the good work. I am glad these "ergonomic" issues are being brought to light.
One more reason for me to get on my soap box with people new to this industry.

It sounds like you might have a bone spur or something like that in your hip joint, Jesse.

Have you ever tried glucosamine or chondroitin? (probably messed up that spelling).

and by the way, you wrote me a PM, but when I wrote a long, heartfelt repsonse and sent it, it said your inbox was too full to accept PMs.

Your loss, cause I'm not typing all that out again!

That spelled right. I even got up and got my bottle to double check it in hopes of getting you on some spelling. I was just at the chiropractors office to take x-rays and start the process. He's saying its rumored it helps. He didn't sound one way or another. Seems like its going to take the test of time before that complex will prove its worth.

I'd try hitting up the chiropractors first. There is a lot of nerves in your back and if your out of line it can really start to pinch your back. If it is a bone spur the chiropractor is going to be cheaper to start with.

Hope ya feel better and I cannot wait for more saddles to be ANSI rated so the people who work for the larger companies can wear them. *shakes fist at liability* I'd have one that is better for my back but its not approved.

In the front or the back? Is it deep in the buttock?

Sounds like the piriformis muscle. What is your primary ascent technique? Do you foot lock? If so what is your top leg? PM me and I would be happy to discuss further.

Just a general reply - its good that workers are recognising the MSD risks of tree work, for their own sakes (and those that suffer their bear with a sore back grouchiness : )

What is understandable but a little frustrating, is the focus on rehab, rather than prevention; do the same old and suffer the same old - perpetual rehab isn't the answer, will cost an awful lot and may lead to something more serious later in life.

My advice is really to look holistically at how you are working, seek bio-mechanical efficiency where you can, and do compensatory exercise where you can't.

Exercise is key. When it comes to that, you really need an experienced fitness professional to show you how until you get it dead right; practice doesn't make perfect - perfect practice makes perfect.

Pictures of exercises won't cut it, or brief explanations by the medical profession that probably aren't qualified, experienced or focused on teaching efficient holistic movement.

If we as an industry were less intent on cutting each others throats by cutting corners and running round like desperados, there would be more opportunity to change.

Best of luck - there are solutions.
