EpiPens, Bees, ArborWear, and Having a Plan

Emergency response is a tough topic to talk about. As you said every situation is different... No cell service, 10 mins, 60 mins from hospital. Ambulance on another call. Its very difficult to practice every possible situation, let alone think of every possible situation. You never know until that moment how you are going to react. Are you going to keep your cool, or fly off the handle? You can say whatever you want but until you are face to face with the emergency you dont know. Given the end result, I think you did pretty good. And now you have "practiced" that particular stressful situation, and you have a better idea how to respond to it next time (hopefully there will not be a next time).
As long as you learned from this incident, and know you can make it better, its a win. The biggest thing is be as prepared as you can and stay calm and keep your mind clear so you can make important decisions. Because as you found, it is life and death. Seconds count.

Glad you are ok. Bee Safe.

Its a good lesson in the fundamentals of emergency response preparedness. Know where the nearest hospital is. Stay calm. Know allergies of your crew. Have a plan.

very similar experience after many years of being stung without issue and then one day wham rushed to the hospital from a wasp sting with the same reaction you had. 2 years later with epipen in my gearbag I get stung by bald face hornets while removing a hemlock, bail out of the tree, sit down pull out the epipen and decide to wait a bit (not saying best choice)stayed calm but nothing happened other than local swelling. go figure? I think it is best to have a pen on every crew because you never know...the guy who wasn't allergic last week could go into anaphylaxis shock today with THIS STING RIGHT NOW!!!!! are YOU prepared!!!!

glad you are ok and prepared

Yeah, but the doctors wont write scripts for epipens without documented allergy. So how do you get one for every crew? Who pays for them? THey arent cheap, $260 w/ insurance, $360 without.

Nick, glad you're still with us... I have the same susceptibility as you, and think about it all the time we have two pens in the truck... (I better check the dates tho)....

Thanks for sharing... and ensuring that we'll all
'Bee safe'

Yours in trees,
