EMPLOYEE PROBLEMS

WE HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH EMPLOYEES NOT WANTING TO DO WHAT THEY ARE ASKED TO DO AND THEY KEEP MAKING THE SAME MISTAKES OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THEY ARE DAMAGING OUR EQUIPMENT. HOW DO WE GET OUR EMPLOYEES TO START LISTENING TO US AND RESPECT OUR EQUIPMENT? WE CANNOT KEEP AFFORDING TO FIX THEIR DAMAGES. ALSO WHEN WE ARE NOT ON THE JOB SITE IT DONT SEEM THAT MUCH OF ANYTHING GETS DONE ALTHOUGH THEY SAY THEY HAVE BEEN STAYING BUSY. IS THERE ANY WAY TO CORRECT THESE PROBLEMS OTHER THAN FIRING THEM? I HAVE ONE EMPLOYEE THAT REALLY DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THE WORD "NO"
I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE. THANK YOU

Can them. I know you donm't want to but you also don't want to start fixing all of your equipment all the time either. I look at it this way if they can not stay busy and they are grown men then they should go get a different job. That is just pure laziness. Not acceptable.

[Would you type without using all capitals? It's viewed as shouting and is hard to read]

You need to learn how to be a proper supervisor. There should be classes at tech colleges or community colleges. Without good supervisors you'll never be able to change the performance of any crew.

You can setup all sorts of consequences for misbehavior but that isn't the way to run a proper company.

Tom what would the heading or search for these classes be under? I've never heard of classes like this but I'd like to look into such a class.

MB has the right idea.

Make them learn their tasks and have them sign off that they know what to do.
Work with them and set the pace.
Id fire any of them who dont take things seriously.
Ya gotta wanna be there right? I do everthing by myself for the most part. Good luck, I cant really say that I would know how to handle it... Firing and asswoopins untill you get the guys dialed in I geuss.

I can say this...If you are not a "Working/Climbing/in the feild" type of owner, then dont expect much as they will most likely never respect you.

Goodluck

Signing off is the key, especially if it ever comes to the courts. Initials on every major point, and a signature at the end. One copy to the employee and another in their folder.

Easy peasy japanesy!

Look for supervisor/managment/human resources/sociolgy.

Make a call to the closest schools and explain what you need. Any good career councilor will be able to help you.

Sometimes the chamber of conference has training. Try the Small business association...lots of free classes from them.

Don,
good luck with all that. I hate to say it but it sounds like showing the worst one in the bunch to the door might be a wise idea.

Leadership matters. Employees behaving that way aren't being led.

Absolutly! The leader of the pack is slackin and the rest are following suit. Nip it in the bud fast or it will be hard to change the behavior.
Try this, you work with the crew for a day or so and see if the productivity increases. Take notes of good things and bad. Praise when you see something good. Correct what you see is questionable. Have them read operators manuals of all the equipment. Quiz them on it. Document everything (good and bad), go over what you documented with each employee and have them sign and date it. Rather than criticize, say " I see an opportunity for improvement".

There is a leadership. It may not be the person officially in charge but someone of a stronger character. Watch how the crew interacts to determine who the leader really is.

MB's handbook is great to establish your expectations and norms. Signing off on this and on equipment manual and training again puts them on record for performing in the manner you need.

If behaviour is not in line then put them on notice and require them to correct or adhere to the guidelines agreed to.

Find out what the proper procedure for dismissal is in jurisdiction then follow it closely.

These guys will only listen if you are disciplined enough to follow the guidelines yourself and follow through.

Good luck!
