Employee Equipment

I supply ever climbing related thing within reason. Each employee purchases their own climbing saw.
I'm a firm believer in supplying the best gear. Each climber can have a treeMOTION if that's the one they like. I see it this way....why wouldn't I supply what is most comfortable or top of the line. They are in it hours on end. We climb all SRT. That actually cuts down on gear. No need for all that double rope junk (just my opinion). I also get each team member appropriate clothes. Arborwear plants, shirts and a North Face jacket for winter. I also get them a logo tuefelberger bag with their name on it to keep everything clean and nice. Attached pic.
My team members don't abuse it. I have an awesome team though.

So, I’m hoping to get some more thoughts on this topic. We recently hired a young, excellent climber. He’s got all his own gear. We’re thinking we will replace what he wears out and also give him a yearly stipend to buy whatever climbing gear he wants. What’s a reasonable number? $500? $1,000?

We give all our climbers $1000 per year, delivered quarterly $250 each time, to spread it out because a lot of guys really can’t manage money.

We distribute it via a prepaid debit card, so that we can easily give it, and we can monitor what it is being used to purchase.

Also, at hire, we give an additional $250 to enable the climber to purchase anything he may need to get started with us.

I like this, but what are your thoughts on gift certs from preferred suppliers?

We tried that for a while - we buy almost exclusively from Gap Arborist Supply - and it was just not ideal, as we could not remotely reload the gift certificate, we would have had to buy a new one for every climber, every quarter. The prepaid card turned out to work better.

Fantastic benny. I felt lucky to have $500 / year when under employ. They did the ordering on behalf of employees which worked fine as well (obviously ordering whatever was requested). Order might go slightly over $500, no need to nickel and dime.

How’s your employee retention? It’s rare to see a benefit as generous as this. Guys wonder why people leave…it boils down to the lack of perks like this. Kudos, man.

It’s pretty good, but not as good as what we would like to see it sometimes. It seems that this industry as a whole, people just don’t stay in one place very long anymore. Doesn’t seem to matter how good the benefits are, because we give some pretty good ones.
