DynaSorb or double braid?

[ QUOTE ]
Ahhh, I didn't realize your feet were in the hole! (4:25 second vid) I just always thought you were kneeling down... nice and comfortable. It sure did look like some solid wood.

Did you finish it off with the block driver?... speaking of which, whatever happened to the block driver? I want one. Anyone ever start manufacturing it?

Also, I've heard you explain it before, but if you could again, the small carabiner placed right above the rigging block and through the eye. When is it necessary to use this added safety precaution?

[/ QUOTE ]

I sold them all, and then, couldn't be bothered making another batch. Going it alone is tough, and expensive, especially with something quite specialized as it was. I made about 20% mark-up, 20% for the dealer, should have been more but I couldn't afford to produce in high numbers....so in the end I decided it wasn't worth all the hassle. I learned a lot, if nothing else.

The karabiner is just to hang the block on my belt when I'm moving down.

Was anyone interested in investing in the tool at the time?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep, but I was impatient and went it alone. Let that be a lesson to me!

[ QUOTE ]
Can you talk to them to see if they are still interested? Is it too late?

[/ QUOTE ]

Its too late for me because I just have no interest in it anymore.

Alright send me those blue prints and I'll see what I can do.

Get that right and you're doing something!

My rigging philosophy has been built on using double braid ropes with low stretch. Design the system to take a calculated load and make the cuts and drops fit the system. Using low stretch ropes makes sense to me. It takes a variable out of the system that I left behind many years ago when I abandoned three strand synthetic ropes and moved to double braids.

I understand the design of DynaSorb and it makes sense if the goal is to reduce the load at the rigging point. There are other ways of reducing that load. It seems to me that trying to factor in rope stretch adds an unknown variable. The other, and more important issue about stretch, is how to account for the added distance the chunk will drop because of rope stretch. Again, many years ago I punched a hole in a garage roof because I didn't account for rope stretch when chunking down a large limb using three strand. That wouldn't have happened using double braid. Now, I wonder if it might happen using DynaSorb.

The crew that I'm working with likes DS but they haven't

articulated a reason to like it over using DB rope.

By now there must be some feedback about using DS...what is it?

Thanks

I know you like some dynamic properties in your climbing line so I was surprised to have you be a DB guy for rigging. Norm Hall has it right, both lines have their place. We use both. It might be difficult for a large company to manage multiple bull ropes, but for our one crew we can use the right line for the right job. There are a lot of variables in tree work so having a lot of different tools and techniques available to address the variables is important.

Oh boy I could only imagine, lets see I'm going on three plus years now and she is still waiting for that ring. You would wonder when a guy would pull the trigger right? 27 years young though, so... I guess time is still on our side. No kids... yet... just got a puppy, so I think that will buy me some time. Let's hope.

Any chance ya'll trying for another?... I'd like to see a Reg Jr. someday, probably make one hell of a climber. Maybe you'll slip one buy the goalie?

What was the knot you used to attach the rigging line to the piece at 3:02?

[/ QUOTE ]

With the 2 lines? Cows hitch on I'd say. Dont know about the pull line.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's the line lowering the piece, the yellow one. It doesn't look much like a Cow hitch to me.

You're right Banjo, its not a cows. A few chunks later, same knot I believe but the lines spread apart this time.

We're too old now Bryan

That last one is an awesome photo.. its all there. great composition....should be entered in a photo contest or something...

On smaller stuff I've been trying "hingeless" cuts... just a deep notch, undermining the COG, and keep cutting the back til it falls

I like the picture too . In a way it looks like a little over kill , but I wasn't there . Just some quick questions , and again I liked that picture , I just never felt the need to double rope a log . That is cool , and alot of work . One , could you have cut the log bigger ? all that trouble and two lines , Looks to me it would be fine . Two , where the marls cross on the two ties , do you get damage on your lines from the weight on the ropes pressing on the other ? Just asking Reg , I but tie alot of logs , so my question is this , Was the log getting locked up , and if it wasn't was there the same amount of wraps on each device ? If they did run , would both lines split the load ? Thanks . You can answer these in Baltimore if you like . I'll be there . Again , nice photo .

since we're gonna talk . We might as well have something to talk about . Back to the photo :
Great shot , action and stuff that makes a kid want to be a treeman .
As a fellow treeman , some ballbusting comes with the game . My brother is a City FF , rhey bust all balls. So.. I;m gonna bust your balls REG on that photo . Ready ?
Like I said we'll talk about it .
I call that Comfort Egg Rigging . That was an easy spot to rig that log , for you . The tree told you where to cut . I would have cut it at the bend below you , bigger , safe piece and you probally wanted have needed a tag line ( I know, sorry , always have a tag line , my bad ) . CER hope nothing breaks. See You @ the Expo
