Why does it seem like tree top(on the ground) would have a larger surface area than the aerial cut it came from?
Just an illusion, because the co-dominate leader joint diameter, is much larger than where the cut is?
Sorry for reposting your photo, just curious.
My only guess is that the way the tree top looks has something to do with the camera angle, as that top definitely came from where the cut is that you see.

I do not recall the exact diameter of the tree, but it was sizable, probably around 20” or so at the cut.
