Dropped top handle saw today...

Just dropped my 201 out of a tree...I was shocked I didn't know what happened. My boss was yelling. I'm like wft I didn't he do anything. Turns out that little clip on the back broke. I don't know why it's really not even that old. 2 years maybe give or take.

Then my boss goes oh sorry sorry it wasn't your fault the clip broke. I go oh alright I knew it wasn't anything I did.

I mean, it sucks getting yelled at but to be honest that would have been my first assumption as well. I've seen lots of user-error in tree work, never seen a leash mount fail. Obviously it can happen and you prove that here, but I get where the boss was coming from. Glad he apologized.

Right.. definitely no doubt alot of user error for sure. So yeah I got it too. I was just shocked like didn't know wtf happened. Lol

I hardly ever unclip when making a cut...and one time when I did I was so close to dropping it into my lanyard. Not drop drop like ease it into my lanyard.

Don’t worry, if I see a saw fall out of a tree I’m likely to holler too, same way I will any time something unexpected comes out of a tree.

I’ve never seen one of those loops come off a saw either, in my 12ish years of climbing. Maybe it was stressed from being dropped/pulled hard by a lanyard at some point? Or the screw loosened somehow?

Who knows, anyway glad to hear all survived the encounter unscathed!

Yeah thanks...the gear loop just broke in the middle of the wire . It's still on there and everything it's weird. I've never heard of 1 failing either. Never gave it a thought. I never really store it hard where it would be stressed.

Huh, well that seems like a potential manufacturing issue. Might be worth shooting Stihl an email about it.
Yeah maybe...I might do that. I definitely would if anything would have broke. I don't like how I have to hook my saw now. I have to girth hitch it on the handle. Not the side handle the trigger handle

DMM makes some rubber grommets that fit a biner, one flavor has a flat side to it. I’ve wondered if they would fit in that wire loop.... would be sweet if they did, would keep a carabiner from sloshing around on it making for rapid stowing, and maybe extend the life of the wire keeper?

Yeah I know what you mean..huh never ever thought to try. I don't think mine could be fixed tho. The wire. Don't think a weld or something would hold. Wouldn't really trust it. Makes me want a new saw. But prob won't get one for a couple more years.

You may be able to hook the side handle if you have a "Transporter"/Shembiner/etc type of hook, I know I can rack 2 of my climbsaws that way but the bigger one is uncomfortable, a 201 may be too large to be comfortable there..

Hope this was company-equipment, not your own saw :/ Sucks to hear & glad to hear no harm resulted, I just googled to check and see that it is a metal loop (which is what I'm used to, from my 355t to my $135 ebay clonesaw), couldn't imagine one breaking would be interested in a pic if you had one!)

How'd the saw fare? Running OK? Have always been amazed at the durability of the saws I've got, haven't had a drop in a while but my 2 "go-to" saws have both taken >20' falls, damage-free!!

Damn sounds like it is your saw (am always uncertain when I hear 'bosses', the bosses I've seen supply saws to their own staff but not to me when I do per-climb jobs for them, it's basically expected that I come w/ my own everything - which I prefer - but have never seen a company having their climbers buy their own saw) If you're not dead-set on Stihl, the echo 355t is only $350 and is nearly identical weight and horsepower to the 201t (don't wanna get into arguments but anecdotally it seems the 355's are better off-shelf, and it's certain the 201t's are better if you go getting the jug modded) and you get 1yr commercial-use warranty, also you can use it for 7d and still return it if you're not sold on it ;D Note: the carb will be set very lean and should be adjusted, also the OEM b&c is dogshit you'll probably want to go to Monkeybeaver for the 1/4" pitch sprocket and accompanying Panther b&c, if you're used to Stihl B&C's...can't tell if I'm envious of Stihl b&c's, or if I'm only experienced with sub-par, homeowner-grade b&c combo's (have never gone and bought pro chains, I just buy new, cheap chains whenever mine are done, need to figure out a better approach here :P )

Ok thanks for your advice..and don't have a pic right now but I'll take one tomorrow for ya. And yes sorry to say but luckily it was a company saw. Thank God. And yeah other than the clip breaking the saw was fine must have landed just right.

Yeah like I said luckily a company saw. Not personal. And I'm not dead set on sthil but that's all I have ever ran. And I do love them there amazing saws that last a long time. With barley ever any serious problems out of them. But yeah I'd be open to try anything just haven't had the chance. But I will try to look into the 355ts. Do some research. Thanks for the knowledge.

I'd replace the ring with a new part, can't be too expensive. If you have trust issues with the new clip, you could fashion a lanyard from 1/8" or similar steel cable and crimps. Make an eye2eye, attach one eye to a secure bolt on the saw and the other eye as a backup to the lanyard ring.

I’ve tried that, they won’t stay in. I even tried making one, but could not get it to stay in under normal uses.

I'll look into it..but idk if you can I'll have to take another look at it tomorrow. If I think it may be able to be fixed. Putting another ring in there I'll take it to our saw barn and see what they think. These guy at burville power treat us well. Real well. Just curious what there thoughts s would be .

I forget which saw I looked at the attachment ring on, either a 193t or 200t, but you remove one piece of plastic and then it replaces with one torx screw, if I remember correctly
