Double towing in new jersey?

I was wondering if anybody knows the rules of double towing with a passenger vehicle? I see tractor trailers double towing in this state but never saw a pickup doing it. I was hoping to tow a small dump trailer with a bandit 65 behind it, as long as i didnt have to back up it would make life easier.
I tried searching the laws but really couldn't find much.

Most states require a class A Cdl with a doubles endorsement. Some states drop the Cdl requirement but only if the trailer in tow is a RV.

I saw a guy with the same setup of which you speak the other day .. Legal orr not there he was. Hhmmmm.. Laws in NJ .. What laws? ;)

If you're going to try it make sure it's during the first 2 weeks of the month. The last 2 is when the state troopers get busy trying to make some money.
And they do love the commercial vehicles. Got pulled over for a dirty licence plate. They then rang up another $800 in fines for some pretty stupid stuff.

oooh not cool..let me guess rt 17? I heard of a guy getting a ticket for not having commercial plates on his jeep because he had a spare tire cover with the name of the dealer on it!
I thought that was a myth about the last 2 weeks of the month?
Im gonna hit the dmv tomorrow to see if i can get some answers..

Close, Rte 4 under 17. We used to take alternates to 17 just to avoid them. Yeah, DMV isn't going to be of much help. For every person you talk to you'll get a different answer.

DMV is not going to know the laws. You can usually get decent info from state troopers, they're the ones who enforce that stuff around here, but you can even receive wrong info from them. Best thing you can do is look the laws up yourself.

What a surprise, DMV not knowing the laws. Ideally a DOT compliance officer would be able to give you the info you need.

From quick lookup, it's not allowed in NJ outside of a commercial license with a tandem saddle and commercial trailers.
Here in WI it's allowable for private recreational use only, the first trailer must be a 5th wheel and you still cannot exceed 65' total length.

Michigan has an interesting add-on to a standard drivers license, recreational double. Answer a couple questions and you're allowed to tow two trailers, as long as you keep it within the limits and it's recreational purposes only.

Speaking from experience, I hate double towing. Plan the ever-loving crap out of your driving route, maneuverability sucks and reverse is impossible with two trailers.

You'll also want some way of easily maneuvering the rear trailer on to it's attachment point, such as a trailer dolly or one of those trailer jacks with a drive wheel.

Another tidbit pertaining to the recreational side of double towing. Not all campgrounds have drive-thru sites, you may have to separate the train on arrival.

here's two semi-useful links
