does Osage Orange = Hedge Apple?

The most common use of osage orange is for fence post,as they last for decades.Of course it makes excellant firewood.A less known use is for deck boards on heavy trailers used to haul machinery. The stuff is very tough to tear up with dozers ,track hoes etc.

actually no, back then, I had a bandit 200+. And it wasn't very fun for the guys with it. A "wisper" chipper would have REALLY been bad.

I did get my first years of experience chipping with one of those though. Don't think I we did any O-oranges with it luckily.

can you eat them? if they are related to mulberries I imagin them to not be toxic which I sort of assumed they were. They kind of smel;l sweet and melony

I would never have believed so many posts could be generated by a question of a common name equaling a common name.

This is all great stuff!

My only experience with Osage Orange is up in Davidson, NC, by the college, they have one overhanging the main street and sidewalk. One day my crew was pruning it in the fall, and all the fruit was falling to the ground. Every single person who came up to us asked us if they were edible. We eventually started telling people they were, and that they taste like pumpkin.

Which I am assuming is totally incorrect, but well worth the dissemination of false information.

sometimes you get lucky
