Defragmentation on PC

For those geeks on the Buzz, can you help?

I was trying to perform a defragmentation on my computer. (To improve performance). The report said it could not defragment 19GB \Program Files\V.I.O. POV Manager\Storyboard\1.avi

Can you tell me what the reason is? How can I fix this? My computer has never run as smoothly after I got the POV.

It also says that there are 110,242 fragments related to the POV.

And yes, I know, I need to get a Mac. That will be a late Spring purchase.

I tried, but I couldn't get any leads.

You had better quit while your system still runs!

Sounds like a file currently being used; perhaps in the background.

Go into Task Manager and see if VIO is operating in the background; if it is, close it.

Another big help is to go in periodically under the "Add/Remove Programs" and uninstall old software you aren't using; like trials you decided you didn't like, and whatnot.

It might also be something so large it has no where else to put it. I've never had a defrag not finish. Better get that Mac asap =P.

Hey Jamin when your system goes down keep posting and we'll talk you through it!

We never have problems like that. Guess thats why I enjoyed building a $1200 PC rather than a $2500 MAC that only had one hard drive. Although MACs are pretty nice.

So you just have one .avi video file that it won't mess with, but its defragmenting others? A 19 Gig one?

How much reserve space do you have on that drive anyway? Is it close to maxed-out? A drive can't fill all the way. Do you have a situation where there is a 19 Gig video file but only 5 Gigs of space left? In that case, it would be like getting a pool table in a house, and not being able to move it into other rooms due to home improvments that happened after the initial purchase.

I have plenty or room for videos, but don't mess with them much anymore because they eat up hard drive space. And I find that even if there is drive space, it really extends the defrag time due to the file sizes that have to be moved around.

With images up to 10 and 12 megs now for just photo files, I find that even one unloading of the camera can quickly use space on a 100 Gig external backup drive.
