Been using 12 strand for slings since I started, but they seem to show wear almost instantly. Who's used double braid for slings? Do you still? Do they seem to last longer than 12 strand slings?

12 strand slings last longer than thier new appearance and I feel they work a little better because they are like tree velcro, so they stay put. Am steel makes a great sling as well, super light and tough (but not heat resistant). My double braid slings are reserved for crane balancers, port a wrap anchor, etc.

That tree velcro feel is part of why I'm considering double braid. If it's a large stem (so I can't easily reach the back while holding the front), when I go to tie the cow hitch or timber hitch, it doesn't slide as easily along the bark as I'd like. There are times I am cranking down against the friction of the cord against bark to get my knot as tight as I can when I wonder if double braid wouldn't be better suited to the task. Yes, I'd lose that friction on the load catch, but the knot would certainly be tighter.

IDK, I may give it a go regardless of what comes out of this thread. Just seems to me that there is probably diminishing returns at a certain point.

Now for small stem ties, 12 strand is still king in my mind, but it's those big ties I'm concerned with.

My 5/8" slings still look great when I am ready to retire them. 3/4" slings look a year old after 3 weeks.

I know what you mean, that's the part of the day/ job that those kinds of things can get so vothersome, down right annoying. Give 1/2" Am steel a try at some point, it slides nice and super light (it is very static so only use it with dynasorb/polydyne

I'll think about the amsteel. Never messed with the stuff before, but if it glides easily, I'd to rather have a nice, light sling than 14 miles of 3/4"

I use amsteel for a lot of things. I got some friction savers I use for rigging or redirect, a few small loopies, and a whoopie. They all serve their purpose well and take up almost no room
