Quite a while ago I read an article about the changes to North America as a result of European colonization.
The theory was that pre-settlement the bison herds were kept smaller on the plains by Native hunters. The effect of bison grazing on prairie grass was being looked at too. At the time they thought that after colonization there was a mass die-off of the Native population. This lead to a huge increase in the size of the bison herds. Part of what Shigo would call nature's dynamic equilibrium...not balance.
I read this article today
Makes for more...hmmm, interesting...thoughts
