Dark Side of the Moon

I have a strange musical background and actually never sat down and listen to Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety until a few weeks ago. The weather was very scary here so the bride and I vacated our little cabin and stayed at a friends place for the night. They ended up having a little storm party and once everyone was sufficiently lubricated they started spinning old vinyl.. The owner is an audiophile with an amazing system and when they queued up Dark Side I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.. A sonic masterpiece that gave me goosebumps!

I attended a Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon concert at the Philadelphia Spectrum in 1974. It was their latest album. I've got three copies on vinyl and one is a Master Recording.

Brings back a memory of my uncle building a kit light organ, where different color lights go different brightnesses in time to the frequency content of the music and you guessed it Dark Side of the Moon was the demo using the song with all the clock chimes in the intro. Used to be popular home build kits, my friends dad built his stereo, can anyone remember the - Heathkit!!! times gone by...

To be honest, Animals is probably my favorite Floyd album. And I liked The Wall more than Dark Side as a teenager....

"If you didn't care what happened to me,
And I didn't care for you,
We would zig zag our way through the boredom and pain,
Occasionally glancing up through the rain,
Wondering which of the buggers to blame,
And watching, for pigs on the wing."

“Two nipples and one mouth.”
— Graelin expression for when unable to pick between two options

Learning to Fly was a transformational song for me as an eighth grader. Kind of the newer Pink Floyd stuff. Still a great song though.

I got to go to a Pink Floyd concert as a junior in highschool. That was an epic show.

I heard a review of David Gilmour guitar playing. He is a master of knowing when not to play. The true magic of his playing is in the spaces between the notes. After hearing that review, that's what I hear now and the way I listen to it.

Roger Waters live in Berlin is probably one of the few concerts that is awesome to watch on video. What a show that must have been live.

Details of your strange musical background?

I have never had a problem separating the art from the artist.

So many reject songs or books because the artist holds or has held views counter to current social mores.

I cannot get my head round that.
There are artists I wouldn’t financially support but that’s different from enjoying their music.

My father turned my brother and myself onto hard bop jazz, blues, and soul music at a very early age and it kinda ruined us. With the exception of a few bands/artists we had very little interest in rock and pop. Add to that the fact that from 1979- to the mid 80’s I was in logging camps in Alaska and I pretty much missed out on most of the rock/pop from the 70’s and 80’s.

A shout out to my brother Curtis who has spent his entire adult life as a working and traveling pro musician. You are one hell of a guitar slinger little bro!

Rico is there any online or other music I can peruse from your brother? Did the musician gene skip you? I've seen one or two generation skips in families. Neighbours kid pitch perfect in junior kindergarten, both parents toneless, earlier generations a famous musician.
