That is an excellent idea. I have worked with it a few times to figure out a good splice. Really hard to explain, but really I just splice a brummell midline, and then use the two tails, one for the foot loop, and the other, shorter one for the tether to the croll.
Where can I get an ascender like the one Joe has in the video? Also, is their any need for a prussic style back-up with this system? I mean you are climbing with two ascenders backing each-other up. How would this roll in a comp??

Thats what I've wondered. I use the ascentree, and am tethered to both that, and have the croll directly on my bridge. "Just in case", I have some cordage tied to the top attachment points on the handled ascender, and just tie it on with a blakes, but wonder if thats "too" redundant.

I was thinking of splicing up a whoopie sling but make the bury of the fixed eye extra long so I can use the end of the taper to make another locked eye out of it. Hope that make sense.

The ascender in the video is a Kong Futura, heres a link,

I think in competions you have to have the top ascender backed up with a toothless cam (Petzl Shunt) or prussic in case the hand ascender gets shock loaded and shreads the rope.. not 100% sure on that though. I currently have a petzl croll which backs up my hand acsender connected with a rated sling. I connect straight to the croll.

I use this setup

I use the kong futura, it's neat and compact.

I don't back it up with anything or even feel the need to connect it to me.

But my "chest" ascender is either a uni or ropewrench with hitch, so the ascender is really just a hand assist rather than a life support connection.

As Kevin B has brought up, I too really dont like being attached to a one-way toothed cam that i cant release if hanging in it with my body weight. If something goes badly wrong i'd like to be able to just let go and descend out on a hitch/wrench or uni.

The kong futura really gives a natural feeling hand hold on the rope, i prefer it over a handle on some funny un-natural angle.

We also have them in Australia at Treegear | Kong Futura Hand Ascenders

I even did a bit of "product testing" with that set up just today in this Mountain Ash - video to come!

Hey John, I'm 99% sure that two ascenders is legit in a comp. One backs up the other. It sounds like you have the right idea about the splice, I think Nick posted something similar some time back. All you have to do to make it adjustable would be a whoopie style splice on the foot loop side.

Hey guys..

Going to have a go at the "custom splice" that connects hand accender and croll aswell as having an adjustable foot loop, spliced from one piece of tennex (hollow Braid)

Is featured in this video

If anyone has spliced one, any tips/instruction would be good

cheers

Yup ... used that 'splice' for a while ... works well!

Here's a LINK to a thread that covers one significant aspect of the concept.

And here's a VIDEO of the foot-loop ... but there's a newer version of the foot-loop that is even simpler to use (no vid yet).
