CRITIQUE MY CLIMB! ...rope walking on 9mm HTP

Why are hitches much more "dependable" when I have never had the grigri fail?

.

If you were referring to what I said. First, I didn't say "much more" dependable just dependable and then added imo. (I have actually never climbed on one of these rope gizmos except for my ascenders [which make me cringe at what I imagine they are doing to my rope]) And secondly I was intending to get you some confidence to try a hitch. I think a hitch is a better way to start out in a tree then graduate to mechanical devices after mastering the hitch. This is just my 2 cents fish. You said something about not trusting a hitch and I get that coming from a rock climber I would like to change that thinking for you. Rope on rope in a tree is a method one must try. And I mean climb with a hitch till you are making it work smoothly and without slipping. It's not that hard to dial in a good climbing hitch. Try it you'll like it.

I don't know how you climb on 9mm Fluffy, I don't even like 11. I am a Vortex 12.7 guy myself, anything less just gets in my head lol.

Thanks Adkpk. I did need a confidence boost! I was playing around alot with the eye&eye's that gmcttr let me borrow and I admit that I enjoy the lack of teeth and the lack of what those teeth may do to my rope.

Monkeylove, two years ago I found myself stuck climbing with the protection of a single 7.8mm twin rope. It was exciting to say the least. Haha.

I climb trees cause sometimes it's fun, I do not rec climb as a norm....have done but it's been a couple years and I was on holiday....I climb trees as a job and to provide for my family....therefore it's all what I think is safest for ME....again I have two RR'ers, do you think that is my first choice....hell NO....I pull the wrench out 75% of the time cause it's so damn safe and comfortable to me, not in anyway saying that a RR is not safe that would be lying....But I do love the security of my hitch and wrench...Fish do what suits you but give the damn hitch cords a go you will be really surprised at how a well dressed rope/hitch combo preforms....it's incredible how sweet it is....the wrench is the best thing that happened to tree climbing since good throwline and or 16 strand rope....lolololol

Any of the 8mm hitch cords (Ocean Polyester, Beeline, etc. etc.) will work fine on 9mm climbing line, smooth release and reliable grab. It's all about hitch choice and tuning the coils/wraps/braids to find the sweet spot. Tree climbing is a craft, climbers tweak their systems to get them just right, nothing is is easy-to-use or quite right first time out. I've climbed 9mm, it takes too much effort for me to get a good hand grab on it. 10mm is my acceptable minimum for hitch/rope wrench climbing, prefer 11mm or 11.5 range.

Fun video, and I've learned a few things from the responses. (treebuzz is awesome.) From the video it looked like you were alone. Maybe I'm just pointing out the obvious, but hopefully you did the right thing and let other people know where you were going and when you expected to be back, and had a cell phone with you (no way to tell this from the video of course). Spending all night in a cold tree would be serious exposure.

:risas: Spending all night in a cold tree is what he does. :sisi:

 Haha

Jrgray, awesome tip though to always have a cell handy. One time I was lanyarded to the tree and untied my anchor to avoid a dead branch. I thought it was safe to drop since it was run through my grigri but I noticed out of the corner of my eye that the rope was pulling through and I caught it with 5' to spare. SO CLOSE! That is when I decided to never climb without a cell, haha.
