Levi, I've done a number of long limbs the way you're describing. Actually one tree was a massive dead red oak. This particular one hinged just fine. But I think I've seen red oak act funny at different times of the year. Anyway, tip tie to the crane, come back in to the trunk, face cut on top, undercut, and lift. There were a few on the red oak that had other trees nearby and vertical seemed to be the easiest way out. Many of these were 18" limbs where they met the trunk, and long as hell. It's a great technique. Just cut a wide face and leave some hinge until vertical.
On the other hand, a Tenex spiderleg is one of the easiest things in the world to splice. I can't remember if you've done any splicing yet but I consider Tenex to be "the starter rope for splicing". Best thing to learn on. Oh yeah, back to my point - my homemade spider leg has been a godsend in regular rigging and crane work.
