Crane Removed From Kennesaw Home
(WSB Radio)

"A crane has now been uprighted from a home in Kennesaw, after the machine being used to clear an old oak tree sliced through the Legacy Park subdivision home Tuesday.
WSB's Sandra Parrish reports Barbara Wolfe seems to be taking in stride the reality that her home of 2.5 years is condemned and has to be destroyed.

"I'm good," says Wolfe. "I'm sure it'll hit me."

Wolfe tells WSB she was eating dinner at the time, and heard a loud crashing noise. When she got up to go to the front door to investigate, she saw that the crane had toppled. "When I saw the crane on its side, I ran outside to see if the guy was okay," Wolfe says. Then, she realized the crane had actually gone through her house and that her home was on fire.

Neighbors put out the fire and rescued one of Wolfe's dogs, which was trapped inside. Two other dogs left the house with Wolfe. Wolfe is now waiting to see whether officials will allow her to re-enter her home to salvage her belongings. She plans to stay with friends for now, and says she would eventually hope to rebuild in that neighborhood.

The owner of the tree-cutting service blames a subcontractor's "operator error" for the accident. For his part, the owner denies reports that he asked Wolfe to pay him for the work already completed before the crane fell through the home. Wolfe is standing by her statement.

"He pulled me aside and told me he'd finished two-thirds of the job and he wanted me to pay him two-thirds of the contract," says Wolfe, chuckling. "I laughed and said 'I'm not paying you anything.' He just walked away. He asked me that two or three times. He needed the money to pay his men."

OUCH

Anybody know the crane opperator?

I work as a residential building designer. Next time someone says they need to trim a little square footage to meet their budget I can pass along the referral!

Climb Safe! Oh! And watch out for swinging booms; I guess we now know why it is called a boom...BOOM!

Operator error? On which end of the crane? This is a huge foul-up, some heads are gonna roll. It's unfortunate that it happened but not surprising. It's easy to underestimate the weight of a cut piece and once it's cut it may be too late. Didn't the Chisolm's make a crane removal video? Where can I find it?

From the looks of the tree and piece on the ground the cut was not all that heavy. I do not think the operator could see the climber cutting or rigging. Bad communication and planning may have caused this one.

i would think that boom is not pretzled, hit house storng and straight; so over loaded/impacted, boom side outriggers not set/padded properly on solid ground or no counter balance. Looks more like tipping than pretzled boom? Climber to crane working blind, operator can't see load?

Imagine how climber must have felt that boom shearing down side of tree slamming on ground near base; i imagine you could feel both in tree with the sound of house crunching... i think s/he was very lucky! As well as people in other part of house, crew on ground that could've been under boom of boom going boom....

That foto is a keeper for the mounting pile of thought pro-voking pix from this amazing proffession!
