Crane removal staying attached to the ball

In some cases, the crane operator wants to use his own 17 ton or larger screw pin shackle and the pin eye stock is to large to fit a carabiner over it. In this case, we use a 1/4" wire tie to secure the pin from unthreading. In the attachment, the wire tie is wound around the bow of the shackle twice, then goes through the pin 'eye'.
The idea in both scenario's is to make sure the pin can not unthread itself.

The shackle on the hook is to spread the load of spider legs/multiple slings and prevent them from rolling off the hook?

Yes. The cranes we rent have wear on the hooks from wire rope slings. If we were to install synthetic slings onto the crane hook, they would get abraded to no end. Whenever we use synthetics, we install either a 17 or 25 (depending on what diameter slings we use) ton screw pin shackle on the crane hook and secure the crane 'hook gate' closed. The shackle in the 2nd pic is a 25 ton.

Good eye Mahk.

Ok, i can see staying tied in sometimes, but in the last trunk pic? Why not make the cut and rappell down, then have crane hoist. Seems like riding it is asking for trouble, IMO.

tried it yesterday on a crane job..Very dead white pine. Rode up, lowered off...made the cut. The rapped to the ground. Crane guy made the lift....worked good in a sketchy dead tree
