Crane Fire

Had a solenoid cook off the starter in our '06 CAT diesel Sterling/Terex 4792 23.5 ton boom truck. My father bought the crane used two years ago, used from a roofing company 1500 miles away. The fire destroyed a/the wiring harness, and getting information (engine schematic or wiring diagram) from CAT and or/ Giuffre Bros. (they built the machine) has been like pulling teeth. Any suggestions?

If I read it right the problem was on the sterlin/motor right? If so try to find a dealer/repair shop that works with the sterlings they might have a schematic. I would think Giuffre bros. should have one but if they arent helpful then time is most important and better to look elsewhere. A cat dealer may be helpful too. I have a cat motor in my international. My local dealer is great but there is a ct dealer near me that is good too.

Here is a body builder hotline for sterling trucks. It may be useful.
503-745-6822.

What year truck and what cat motor do you have?

the truck/motor is an '06 I'll have to check on the engine as it is a fairly new truck and I am unfamiliar with it as of yet....getting to know it fairly quickly :D, Unfortunately this is the 3rd starter in 2 yrs...I guess at least we know where the problem started.

The big problem resides in the fact that the motor and crane are separate (put together by at least 2 parties) and we cannot find where the two were linked (limited documentation) as per the harness. we've ordered two harness with the original part no. and both were wrong. SO somewhere along the lines the harness was supplemented/added-to, at least thats what we believe.

Thank you allmark for the number, I will try tomorrow.

I put a master disconnect at the batteries. Wasworried something like that mite happen. I had a short inside the crane ignition switch an the damn thing kept trying to start its self. Thanks for posting, good luck.

I want to thank you gentlemen for your advice. The crane is up and running. It was a matter of the connectors between then truck and the crane, and lack of documentation, as we bought used. Fixed just in time to fill the new custom Izuzu chip truck! Thanks guys...

I had a prob with my truck not getting juice from the solenoid to the fuel pump couple of wks. ago and the source was faulty shut off switch shorting on the control board of the crane. Notoriously short lived.

First one went out and the other later. Truck starter would operate but not start. Big help was friend, Tom (dbl612 on Buzz) as he is a crane mechanic (real good one obviously).

Love to see a pict of your truck and crane thrash. What size Cat have you got in there? I think that is the best size crane for not crushing driveways and even lawn riding if hard panned like now.

On my last annual inspection, it was pointed out to me that I needed a 5lb. min fire extinguisher in the cab of the crane, which I now have. I told the inspector I already had one in the truck cab to meet the DOT requirements (and I have been asked to show it on a couple roadside/port of entry inspections)and he said, not good enough, has to be in operators cab. I thought about it a bit, and then just spent the 20 bucks so now I have two. Not a bad idea I guess.

TV, This is the best photo I could come up with at the moment. I have more but not too tech savvy/motivated to get more pics up.

Do you have a Sterling? I have heard that they eat starters, and have seen a few burned up as well. The 23.5ton is perfect for us, as you said, driving on lawns and cracking driveways (might've cracked a few walkways etc...:D). I started on a 12 ton JLG which got the job done a lot of the time but 12T is way under-gunning it for tree work. I know this now with a crane twice the capacity. A little tight sneaking it in tight spots, but you have the power and reach when you need it.

Courier - Not a bad thing to have when you need it. I know it saved us some of the headache we could have had. We keep one in both dump trucks and the cab of the crane. no enclosed operator cab, just a platform so the one in the chip truck saved me a climb...:D

Nice truck Thrash. I'd be worried bout that right wing breaking off and flipping on guy/you ? on truck. Had a pick last week on long neglected DED elm break on the ground after having to boom it over house and was going real small too because of it. Stay safe.

I have a BT4792 as well. I think it is a great all around crane for tree work. It's well built and a good design, evidence of this is the fact that the crane has changed very little from the 4792's that Simon-Stinger first rolled out in 1993 to the ones rolling off the production line today by Terex, the company that bought Simon-RO.
