craigslist ads

Seems to me, this is a flawed system, and I want no part of it. If I happen to get a good review, so be it, but I'm not going to pay to play on a clearly compromised playing field.

I agree 100% Tom.

I got a call last week from the largest Catholic church here in town, they wanted to know if I wanted to to "sponsor" or basically run an ad in their church programs for the upcoming year. I know that I could probably get some great exposure and good jobs off of this, but I am way too afraid I would get struck by a lightning bolt for using the church as a market. I'm not a bible thumper, don't even go to church, but I feel certain there is something wrong about that.

Don't wanna hijack this thread, just couldn't believe they do that.

'The church' is a group of people, and people will do what it takes to support their cause (I mean this in the best possible way). I am not surprised that a church is soliciting advertisement, but I too am afraid of lightning LOL.

On another note, Noel... Nice news videos. It seems hard to get folks to understand and explain the ISA credential, and you seem to have been able to work that into your short appearances. Well done.

Like joining an association or society to garner business, Noel. The only thing is don't join something that you don't believe in. If it is a church you belong to or a faith that you belong to then there is no harm in letting people know about you. The company I worked for in Toronto got quite a bit of business from his church. He was also a very active member donating his time, providing the church with our services at no cost and as a volunteer for many of their activities.

Networking is the same as word-of-mouth. People will hire you because they know your character and like that.

I'm totally cool with networking within your church, it just seems off when they call non-members to sell ad space in their program. Can't say exactly why that rubs me so wrong, maybe I'm over-sensitive.

Any church that asks companies to advertise through them are on the wrong track. I totally agree with you Noel, that rubs me wrong as well. Especially if your a non member or don't attend regularly. I would even be opposed to the church asking directly, for a member or a company of a member to "sponsor" the church. That is tithing, and should be kept discreet. If an individual or a company wants to give money to the church thats GREAT, but should not be done publicly and used to draw attention towards themselves. It makes that clear in the bible that those who bring attention to themselves when giving are giving for the wrong reasons, and God finds favor in those that give with an humble heart and done in a manor as to not draw attention. If you want verses i'll look it up but for a church to ask a member to give publicly in it self shows me that the church has the wrong direction and intentions. They need to get back to basing themselves off the bible and scripture instead of trying to become the largest or biggest or most appealing.

Again i say thats just wrong. That church is off track.

Hey Noel,

That must be a Catholic thing cause I got the same kind of call.

I can remember over twenty years ago sitting in "church" reading the ads on the back of the weekly news letter. I'm not sure if theywere all members or not. I wouldn't be offended or afraid of "lightning" bolts or whatever. It cost a ton to run a "church" maybe people in these days and times aren't tithing as much....a "church" has bills to pay too.

Now back to Craig's list, My buddy who's much more adept to computers, on a whim, slapped an add up for me. In less than a week
I got a call. (we did have an ice storm though) Who knows?

The harder the need to get a job the more flexibility we'll let our standards bend to achieve it.

I still won't stop for a beverage at the Christian Coffeehouse in town though.

The church needs to lose it's non profit status and start paying taxes.

That is a biggie and ditto that.

I'm the arbo for a large church nearby, they are expanding in the real estate market, buying distressed props to develop. Even their cemetaries are brokered by a real estate agency, down to the square inch. It's clearly a business and admittedly so, but I have to admit I more than enjoy working on the main campus and boneyard's trees, kind of a "peaceful" environment, especially when they toll the big bells.

The first time I came aboard, we bartered for honorable mention in their newspaper resulting in a kind of "sanctioned" approval for the parishoner's trees. Holy
oow did the calls come in.

In spite of all my feelings regarding the intenable hold these institutions have on their followers, I have to admit the one day I watched a homeless man wander in for a handout, the priest walked him into the rectory and he came out with a $20 dollar bill, and I felt pretty good about the whole affair. For a while anyway.

even if you believe in nothing.......that is still believing in something?! and for the record just for the sake of banter mind you .......my church does not"have a hold on me"!! and believers contrary to popular belief are not feeble minded fools.

I think we need a new thread for this subject LOL.

Back on topic, though, I put an ad on Craigslist after reading the beginning of this thread, and I already got a call and did a consultation for a high end client in Newport, RI. We'll see if I get the job!

ha ha competition time! I use craigslist from time to time. Its free and people look at it. My friend is using facebook to sell tree work and its working. I say "smoke em if you got em"

Where else can one find a good semi-retired chainsaw repairman, a cheap chip-truck, the next scheduled meeting for Lesbian's Addicted to Shopping Sprees and an out-call hot oil masseuse all on one page and for FREE?

Personally, advertising with churches is 30-40 % of my business. I often refer to it as my dirty little secret. Its what got me off the ground.

Weekly bulletins or otherwise?

What are the rough stats the costs and effectiveness?

Our church used to have a free directory you could put your business into if you considered it your "church home"

But ran into problems with an outside concern taking that list and our "church family" directory and selling the lists.

I used to get about 10% of my business "in house", as it were, from our church directory but since they stopped publishing it, needless to say, that has gone waaayyy down.

There is a local company here in RI that has big overhead and lots of nice equipment, and he'll take down just about any tree for $ to subsidize/justify the investment. Don't even get me started about the offenses and unwarranted removals... Many many repeat situations, and EVERYONE in our local industry knows about him. 'Nuff said.

Sounds like Sepe.

I got a good bit of work last year from my wife's church, after pulling hangers a few times for them.

CL has netted me some nice coin this year already. Laugh if you will... I am... all the way to the bank.
