Appreciate the report, thanks. I don't think horizontal-ish branch failures is the target subject for strain meters and root plate tilt measurements. Even if a device was developed down to a price point of not ridiculous I think it would end up logically being applied to spars and co-doms as the greatest potential for mitigating bigger risk. At least that's my thinking.
Practically every step outwards from the spar to smaller branches is more complex motions to interpret and I think even one branch away from the spar could have nearly undecipherable net motions. Spars have two axes of bending, net tilt in conjunction with root plate, torsion and crack openness in co-doms. Seems to me correlation and pattern recognition ought to be do-able. Developing hardware is another challenge.
edit - raspberry pi or arduino but the other half of the hardware is instrumentation. obvious start point is incllinometer, accelerometers and gyros on itty bitty chips. separated inclinometer and gap rulers also likely. picture a tri-dom 3 rulers
