Cool tree tent

The best ones I've seen are the Tentsile tents, but they require a balanced 3-point connection in either a hammock or tented configuration. Treeboats are popular too, but their more like hammocks, except for the four-point tie in. In either case, a tarp and or a bug net can easily be added when the elements present themselves. Hammock camping or tree camping is a unique experience and I recommend it highly. Extreme hammock camping is also enjoyable, while remaining safely tied in at all times.
Good notes here, there are a lot of different options for camping, depending on what's most important for you. We have all different kinds of camp setups, all customized for at-height camping in the rainforest, and switch between them all the time, depending on the tree(s), the climbers, weather, etc. The Tentsiles all come with mosquito netting. The ledge is a great option in lots of cases too, but mosquito netting can get tricky, and you may end up needing a bunch of anchor points in addition to the main one. All fun stuff!

Good Lord, the buggers are pricey. Might not be a bad job to make one if a person had a heavy enough sewing machine. The aluminium frame would be easily doable with one of these Harbor Freight pipe rollers that are about $170. Pipe typically comes in 20 foot sticks which, if rolled to a circle, would be about 6 foot diameter. Maybe a thin marine plywood floor in several sections and round mattress pad. Damn, like I need another project.

I bet it compacts easily and fits into a day pack. Seriously, how can this thing even be associated with camping gear? Glamping maybe, but not a very practical camping solution. I suppose you could leave it hanging in your yard and risk damage from incremental weather. Its more like a Yurt, but far more precarious and vulnerable to the elements, not to mention the added stress to the tree. I have to give this two thumbs down, unless you can rent it out and recoup your costs as an AirBNB.

I like it because it seems better than a portaledge for my 5 and 6 year old children.

I have the sewing machine (sewing skills have yet to be acquired).

And like Burrapeg, I have other things to do.

. . . I suppose you could leave it hanging in your yard . . .
This is more or less what I had in mind. I have some really big trees and envisioned sort of a three-point suspension. Those big rascals won't even notice the thing; the tent wouldn't weigh much more than a person. Probably only hang it up in the good months, for kind of a unique guest bedroom when my daughter comes to visit or an outdoor reading room and retreat for myself when I get sick of looking at the walls in my office. As to how practical it actually is, well, I can't recall ever being called practical in my life!

If you can DIY and keep the cost down, do it by all means. It also reminds me of the one person hanging pods, which I would imagine are great for meditating. I like these too...

I mainly prefer the basic simplicity of a hammock. I made an oversized one with a really strong, stretchy, comfortable, silk like fabric, known as 40 Denier Tricot. Just tied the ends to a carabiner and was good to go.
  • Tricot
  • 100% Nylon
  • Very LightWeight Fabric: 0-3.4 oz/yd²
  • 108'' wide. Fabric is sold by the yard and cut to order. For example, order of 1 yard (Qty=1) is 108'' x 36''. Order of 3 yards (Qty=3) is 108'' x 108''.
  • This semi-sheer tricot is appropriate for lingerie or lining especially knits. It has about 50% stretch across the grain for added comfort and ease.
  • Washing Instructions: Hand Wash/Drip Dry

Finally made some progress with my DIY spherical tree tent. The aluminium frame is heavy wall pipe, twelve pieces bent to a 3-1/2 foot radius, for a sphere 7 feet in diameter. It has a carpeted 5-1/2 foot diameter plywood floor with a storage hatch in it for stuff kept below the floor. I wrapped it temporarily with an old tent someone tossed out at our local recycle, til I can save up for a proper canvas cover made. The old tent has nice big screen windows. Now, even though this thing only weighs about 50 or 60 pounds, it is bulky and not really portable in the least! But I have a huge cedar tree in my yard that has a clear path for hoisting the tent up about 40 feet; and I can raise and lower it like an elevator, from inside, with my DeWalt power ascender I built. Once up there, it is hidden from the road and neighbors by the tree's branches. I can go up for a relaxing afternoon with a good book and thermos of tea/coffee, or I can crawl into my sleeping bag and spend the night. To just sit up in it, two or three people have plenty of room. And the tent will easily support that weight; it is hanging directly from the trunk of the big tree, not from a limb. (As a test, I hoisted the front of my 1997 Land Rover from the same point and using the same pulleys and rope for the tent). I envision my daughter enjoying it also, like a small spare bedroom when she comes home for a visit. She is quite savy and won't have any problem using the power ascender to raise or lower the tent. Anyway, here is a photo.

The portaledge has been used for many many years in really exposed places. It’s simple and reasonably portable. It has a single point suspension which makes it ideal for tree camping because you have loads of options for installation. You could put a pulley in one tree and one in a another tree and clothes line your ledge into open space if you wanted the full on exposed experience.

Thanks, guys. It will look a lot better when I have saved up for a fitted canvas cover with some windows, door flap, etc. Dark green boat canvas, so it blends in with the tree. The less conspicuous the better; the neighbors think I am nuts as it is!
