companies that don't pay

Blacklist.com is a great idea, customers rate our job performance and can list us so why not rate the customer :)

Exactly!! Can you imagine the thought going through someones brain when they learn they have been negatively reported by their plumber, landscaper, carpenter and tree guy. Or, when they call around to 10 different tree services and no one will do the work for them, and they then find out it's because there name in on Blacklist.com because they screwed so many people in the past.

That's a great idea. They can rate and review us why can't we do the same to them. A little heads up would help keep some stress off the the daily workload. one, not to waste your time two, not to work for free. This business has to tight of a profit margin sometimes to have to play games and phone tag to get your money that you rightfully earned. One thing I've noticed is the hardworking customer is more appreciative of your work than the rich one who thinks your just a tree cutter and not an arborist and your beneath them. OK I'll stop ranting.

my favourite example is of a chinese restaurant in a small NZ town who refused to pay the bill for tree work.
the operator waited until a busy friday night and walked into the place carrying three dead cats which he promptly slapped down on the counter top and stated loudly that they were the last three he would be supplying at this price and next week the cats would cost more then walked out. Restaurant closed and moved out of town within the month.

ontheropes is right, in general the working person is polite and pays on time because they understand we are working for our money where as the rich customer does not appreciate what they are paying for and seem to treat us like some dirty lopper not the trained and experienced operator that we are.

Or...To counter Angie's List...something like Devil's List...gotta have balance in the world.

Since consumers have Angie's List and Better Business Bureau how do honest service people band together?

Better Consumer Bureau...run the same way that the BBB does?

Of course, the practicality of this idea is that some dead beat would scream defamation or some hogwash after beating out a good service provider.

The best solution, as was mentioned, is to file a lien at the first blink of stalled payment. I'm pretty sure that subcontractors have the same ability to file a lien.

On rare occasion (fortunately) I have had to file a lien. In my case it helped that the owner couldn't get a Certificate of Occupancy until the lien was satisfied, and still he settled for less than the amount owed. Nonetheless, I'd do it in a heartbeat if they tried to give me the shaft.

I have meet/know most of the busy tree services around, some have called me to warn me about a shady customer action. I reciprocate.

I have thought of dumping wood chips in their drive way...then sending them an additional invoice for the $50/yard chips they asked for.
