companies that don't pay

Yeah, still though, try buying something from Lowes or another store without paying upon receipt.
Every bit of effort to get our money is more hours spent. I like to get paid when services are rendered. Just like anything though, you live and learn. Sometimes I want to just turn their yard into a dump site. Just venting though
I've done that ..guy didn't pay ..I told him he could pay by letting me dump on his property when around there ..I'm almost glad he didn't pay ..after what the job was worth and what I've saved by dumping there I'm making out on that deal . I still give him the option to pay and I'll stop dumping when i see him..he's getting full after a few more..I think he's losing the house and must not care or he's on drugs and doesn't care either way he don't pay and I don't play.

Yeah, agreed. You took all the debris away for money, they didn't pay, so it should all come back. I always think about how they would feel if they came home and all the debris was left right where the trees were taken down. I would never do that, but fun to imagine what they would be thinking if it did happen.

Put in the driveway!

You guys might laugh but I'd like to see an angieslist for the contractor. It would be great to see (reviews) what kind of potential customer we'd be working for.

Also, I have a buddy that says each customer has to qualify for an estimate. I think that's a good start. Maybe a few initial questions would help weed out the deadbeats.

No laughing here. I'm big on choosing my customers. It's funny but after awhile I feel like I can weed 'em out before I even meet them, you know, by emails and phone calls. I've been wrong on a couple of those, but my gut was right on most. Bad customers aren't worth the hassle, and losing them makes room to load up your client base with good ones. But take good care of the good ones.

If I even catch a whiff of the may jerk me around for my money funny business I first have the customer sign work order regardless well (except the ones whom have established themselves as top clients through years of being awesome to work for) then the guy who is easy to pick out I incline they pay with green backs or swipe the credit card on the top of the smartphone and I know the money is in there ..personal checks are the trouble makers and the guy who isn't easy to pick out as non payer is going to try and use them . Thats the guy who gets the visits with the chainsaw over shoulder after my lawyer friend writes him a friendly reminder letter ...and if they waste enough of my time and they piss me off. I got friends in low places . And I still might give them a nice present in the driveway.lol

It might take a little while, but eventually you'll develop a "nose" which can reliably separate the good from the bad. If it stinks, don't bother. There are plenty of good people in the world and you'll find them.

If i go look at a job i either don't want to do or think they are going to be a pain in the ass, i add 50% right on top. I also use the line you need to sign the proposal for insurance purposes in the event something happens so my insurance will pay the claim. gets them scribbling in a hurry.

palm waste delivery right on the roller door at 5.30 am on a weekday. bossman I used to work for years ago had us do this to two separate customers who refused to pay up.
Good point Stihlmadd. If it was hardwood chips and logs they might have that - "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade" - attitude.
Firewood, mulch, good to go.
But palm waste? That'll just piss 'em off. :)

I want to start a web page where contractors can review clients. I've got s few that I wish I could warn others about.

I'm thinking redflag.com

Great idea Nick. It could be expanded to all trade contractors. Figure if someone has stiffed a tree service, they have probably stiffed other contractors too.

I have been thinking of that as well. I was thinking BLACKLIST.COM. Then you could warn the customer that you will black list them if they don't pay. Or you could say, "sorry I am not going to work for you, I noticed you have been black listed by another service."
