Comms 2020

I have been thinking about going a different direction with communication systems. We are currently using an older Sena set. They work okay, but I would like some features that they don't offer.

I think it would be useful to have a push to talk feature when convenient.

I think it would be nice to be able to cut in if someone is listening to a podcast and tell them something without having to shut off whatever they're listening to.

I think the noise canceling could be better. Although if someone was stump grinding or running the chipper they could just go into push to talk mode if that was an option.

I talked to Sonetics this afternoon, they seem to have some pretty nice features but it is significantly more expensive than a Sena system. They were talking up to $6,000 depending on options.

Is anyone using anything other than Senna? If so, what do you like about it?
I’ve said this already, but it’s been a bit of time since my previous post in this thread. The Cardo PackTalk Slim system is working very well for us. Still happy with it. Great range and less line of sight required when compared to the Sena SMH10R we used to run.

The Cardo PackTalk Bold might be an easier install on an arborist helmet, just a bigger profile of the control unit because it also holds the battery. We hustled to fit the Slum into our Protos helmets, but the end result is clean and sturdy.

With the mesh technology on Sena you can be listening to a podcast or music and it will drop the sound on that if someone starts talking.
Do the mesh devices clip into the same docking station as the smh10? Or is it completely different?

We hire a crane occasionally and the easiest way to get him on comms is to hand him one of our extra pods that are already synced up. He has his own crane operators headset (smh10) that he plugs it into.

It’s completely different and more secure. But, our new Sena 30K’s can still pair with an SMH10. When we do crane work, my climber, the crane operator and myself will pair our headsets. My climber and crane operator use SMH10 comms and I have the 30K. The 3 of us work on a closed circuit. If I need to talk to my groundies who are communicating on the mesh network, I can open up the mesh network on my headset which brings everyone on the job site together, including my climber and crane operator. It’s fantastic.

@oceans How is the noise canceling with the Cardo Slims? A crew I work with a lot just switched from the Protos coms to Sena, not sure which model. Now they are all complaining about lots of noise coming through the headset. I wanted to go the Cardo route, just don't want to run into the same problem.

Our experience, units straight out of the box, the noise cancellation is excellent. We are using the button microphones mounted up above your forehead area. No need to tap out when you’re chipping or cutting.
