Comments wanted on my new web site

Nice site. The only thing that I noticed was spacing was off in the text. There were extra spaces in between words where they are not needed. I liked the rotating pictures that were of something besides you climbing big removals. Very professional!

http://www.maxburtontrees.com/pruning.html

If you click on the pruning link, the heading says "questions about tree REMOVAL"

In plant health care, I think the first question should be "what IS PHC?" This is a term we in the industry, but it's really vague and the average customer might think everything is health care

In the "emergency" section you use terms like "quickly" and "immediately." Too vague. I think when people see and emergency tree, they think it should be taken care of THAT day...otherwise it's not really an emergency. I would come right out and say that it can be handled THAT day.

I like the rotating pictures, but too many of them are non-tree related. Maybe if the pink lady slipper flower was growing at the base of the tree, it'd be more "tree-ish". Can you swap out some pictures?

And emr is right, there are some spots where the spacing is way off. It looks like there is 5 spaces between words and stuff like that.

The use of contractions is considered unprofessional. Don't say "you're a customer for life". You ARE are customer for life. http://www.wikihow.com/Avoid-Colloquial-%28Informal%29-Writing

All in all, a good site. Just thought I'd try to give some useful feedback.

Thanks for the comments. I fixed the wording on the pruning page. The spacing is going to take longer...my editing program shows the spacing to be perfect, then I upload it and it's all willy-nilly. I like the lady slipper because it's native, but you might be right. The problem with promising same-day service is that sometimes I might not be able to fulfill that. I prefer to be that specific only on a case-to-case basis. Although contractions make text less formal, I wouldn't say it's unprofessional. I think my use of contractions is appropriate for the situation. I'm trying to make a connection with the reader. Look at some ads, contractions are everywhere. Not so much in contracts.

Nice job - it looks good!

In the "contact" section is the first sentence a question or a statement? Maybe I'm missing something, but what is a "vfr"?

Figure out those spaces and I think it will look very nice. Good job.

Some questions.

What is the purpose of the site ... what do you want to gain from having a website?

What program did you build the site with?

Also, it took a long time to load this end, what is the sum total of all the pics in the rotator in Kilobytes? Index page needs to load quick.

The purpose of the web site is to get the phone ringing- that's it. My site address is on my business card, all my ads, and my web promotions. If people decide to visit the site, I just want to get them calling. Once I've got them on the phone, I can control the sale.

Thanks WP, that was a typo. It's fixed.

I used a program called Nvu. It works very well, and the price came in right at budget (zero).

with my dial-up service, i waited for at least two minutes and the first page still didn't show up all the way, there were 7 items remaining. I got tired of waiting. I would have left the site much sooner normally, but I was hoping to see it.

i did get to see some text and the one picture of a climber climbing in shorts.

i then clicked on services and then FAQ. those came up fast.

Very nice.

The amount of pictures might be trying to download into the user's cache before starting the javascript slideshow, and they are very crisp and page source says 23 of them. On internet don't need high quality pictures, might "dumb them down"/ reduce quality to where you can't tell the differance on monitor(but could tell if printed out) to reduce their file sizes. 23 is a lot if trying to hit market of potential dial-up users; especially if they must all load for it to play.

To the same line of thought, might try taking the top Max Burton.. page Banner and making just the tree symbol a graphic and the rest text on page(not part of graphic), to reduce that file size. Tree Removals etc. are individual graphics. Could use 1 graphic for all the green ones, repeated as background of separate cells, then place white text on top of; then only 1 graphic to load down the pipe to user, just repeated(but user's computer does that, not download 3 different graphics; only 1) and could use smaller .gif file not .jpg and still have crisp text.

My site is more image intense, my comments are just in consideration of Xman's. And i've l-earned a lot since i started. Also, i wish i put alternate text on all pictures from the beginning; for audio boxes for blind readers, tool tips and search engines.

Phone number is most important sales hook-up on page; but might be hard for elderly and vision impaired to find and see; especially hard to see on the individual pages. Could be prouder and more inviting with it. i have 21" monitor and service area and home, about etc. text is smaller, making me wonder what it looks like on a 14"(especially the phone number on individual pages on a 14").

That's because it has to load all the pics in the rotator.

Max, ditch the rotator, just keep one pic, at least for the index page ... you need a fast loading page.

I f you want to show off more pics have a pic gallery they can go to.

Nice to hear you are using the business cards and ads to bring the traffic to the website.

That's what I was writing about at the END of this page...

Search engine rank with emphasis on purpose

Someone said to use the word "Today" instead of "Immediately". I think you should stick with immediately and quickly, because if you get 4 calls on a big weather event, you may need 2, 3, or 4 days to handle the problems.

As your page sits, you are not making promises that you can't keep, and that's good.

I like it ....dont understand what the prob is with the pink ladey slipper(never heard of it,from england) but if your going for trees, shrubs a bit more horticulture ie plants and stuff i think would impress customers more, many customers i have know nothing about trees but love that sort of thing and could probably name every flower in latin in there garden but ask for my advice on there trees and they wanna spend money on them....
what programe did you use max? i need to get a web site sorted.

Max, overall i think it's a good site. Pretty clean and simple. Some suggestions however:

The pictures I feel should be more tree-related. The photos of native plants is all good for a botany class or plant nursery sight, but you're a tree care company, so maybe pics of mulching around the trees, proper pruning cuts vs. improper, climbing shots, etc.. etc.. Just my inital thought when seeing. (Think about what the customer will think seeing those photos, and who you are targeting)

Also, I would again mess with the layout a bit, the photos border right up against the side of your layout, it looks a bit tacky... I would try to clean things up a bit to appear more professional. Maybe consider having your toolbar that is at the bottom of the web page moved to the top. When I loaded the page initially I didn't notice it for quite a while because it was below my field of vision on the computer.

Consider changing your font colors and styles on the other pages as well, all green is extremely monotonous, and makes the brain think, oh I don't really want to read that. But the same text with different colors fonts lends itself naturally to reading.

Those are just some suggestions. Don't take this negatively, I do like the sight but there's always room for improvement. Good luck!

Thanks, guys. The program I used is called Nvu. It can be found for free at nvu.com. I grabbed the javascript for the image rotator from another site after a quick Google search. It all took me about 10-11 hours, mostly because of getting stuck on things I couldn't do because of lack of knowledge and skills with this sort of thing. But I got there, eventually.

That girl had just turned 19 in the picture. She worked for me for a summer, and it was quite an experience. Very bright, very good climber, and also very weird. One time, she had a toothache that was getting bad, so at lunch time I gave her a generic ibuprofen from the first aid kit. You know, the kind with no coating so it's all just bitter medicine. So I focus on something else and a minute later I look back and she's got this expression on her face like she smells a dead horse. It was still on her tongue...she had never taken a pill before. I had to teach her to swallow it. Between stuff like that and her crazy knowledge and learning speed, it was a lot of fun to have her as an employee. Did I just hijack my own thread?
