Colleges for Arboriculture

Im posting this on behalf of a friend who is interested in pursuing arboriculture. He wanted to know where some of the best places were to learn. I was also curious as to what others have experienced. I went through a Hort and Urban Forestry program at Clemson and learned alot about plants, but not as much about the actual work side of the tree game. They did offer a tree climbing class and a few tree related classes. Overall it was a good experience. Anyone pursued degrees beyond a Bachelor's?

There are a lot of good colleges for arboriculture and/or Urban Forestry. It really depends on whether the friend wants a two year/technical degree that will focus more on the work and basics side of the industry or a four year degree that will cover a wider diversity of information (like you mentioned) while still getting the necessary work training. The research side of the industry in graduate school is a lot wider and diverse.
Find out what the friend wants to do. If its to run a business and perhaps have something to fall back on, a four year degree would be worth while. But if its just gaining the experience to get a good job with a good company, a two year degree with go a long ways. And if its long term research, a large four year school and then graduate school should be the goal.

If you want a hands on two year school there is no better school than Mid-State Technical College. It is in Wisconsin Rapids, WI and IMO is the best school. You learn a lot and our school is known through out the nation.

Then if you want to get a bachelors you can go 2 more years at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point which is in Stevens Point, WI and is only 25 min away from Wisconsin Rapids.

It is a good route to take.

i attended Sir sanford fleming collage in ontario for a 1 year proram, they taught me everything from pruning to bug to climbing spurless and tree removal. we also covered line clearning, traffic control. and much more. in canada this is the best place to learn and train i think. i go back every year to hire more students to come work for the company i work for. they also have a rope break machine and recently mad a drop test machine, i cant wait to go try a few setups on sigle line to see how the drop test fairs out. anyways fleming would be my vote.

Took a foundation degree in science arboriculture at Myerscough College / UCLAN. Did it part time online over three years since I was unable to stay away for two years, worked great for me - it can be extended to a BcHons in two years of further study. They have great teachers, I can still ask questions whenever I am stuck.

No, it is what it says, a foundation degree. It is a vocational degree. It takes one more year to obtain a bachelors degree. Don´t think they have foundation degree outside UK, certainly not in Norway where I live. I fact we do not have any higher education in arboriculture so I was more or less forced to go abroad.
The prices were reasonable, at the time about 2000usd for a year.
You can check outr their website here: Myerscough college
