CMI Mickey Mouse Pulley

Location
UK
I've recently started climbing on a CMI Mickey Mouse Pulley and have found that due to the new configuration of my system I have had to alter my friction hitch (make the legs longer) in order to prevent grabbing the termination of the rope as well as my hitch when descending.

Previously I had used a fairlead/ self-tend pulley under a short legged Knut Hitch. Velocity Hot line and 8mm Liros Hercules friction hitch cord. This worked well but now does not bight reliably with long legs and with an extra wrap it binds too much.

Any suggestions? Desriptions and photos of how people tie their VTs plus Rope/ Cord combos would be greatly appreciated!

The search for the ultimate fiction hitch, rope and cord continues!

I had the same problem. I switched to a longer hitch cord and fed the legs of hitch cord thru upper carabiner (see photo). Works for me. Keep playing around with it....you'll find the sweet spot

Chris, who spliced that Blaze? I like the whipping!

Guys, I see that it works, but HOW does making the legs longer keep the hitch from getting jammed under the 'biner?

It's a shame there's a problem with it. It seems this would happen to everyone, right?

I spliced it...thanks for the compliment!

As far as a longer hitch cord, this results in a longer hitch. This helps keep the end of the hitch (the wraps in a vt) above the biner while the pulley is tending the hitch. I've been using a stiffer cord (bail out) also seems to help.

Also, having a tight eye splice (compared to a girth hitch, double fisherman's, or ancher hitch) leaves less for the hitch to catch on, IMHO.

I think its a matter of keeping the top turns of the hitch above the termination point so the 'biner or splice doesn't
compress the hitch.
Here's a nice "whipping" job IMO

Nice whipping, Rog! Who spliced it? Labels and everything.

Did they melt the whipping twine? That part I don't like so much. The whipping looks sharp, though!

Makes sense what you guys are saying...keep the top of the hitch higher than anything that can catch it.

Thanks for the pointers chaps, I'll carry on 'fighting the good fight' and honing my system.

I'm also keen to have a play with the Hitch Climber (from Treemagineers) to see how the two compare.

I don't see any advantage of that system; places the legs of rope too close together, interferes with your hitch as you've found and prevents the hitch karabiner rotating to the direction of pull when tailing slack.

No advantage to which system, Paolo... the hitch climber?

Paranoia is an excessive anxiety or fear concerning one's own well-being which is considered irrational and excessive, perhaps to the point of being a psychosis. This typically includes persecutory beliefs concerning a likely threat, or a belief in a conspiracy theory. (Wikipedia).

You guys should try working together maybe for a common goal.I think being critical of other products is not the best approach, just be positive about your ideas and let others form there own opinions.Ive been following these post for a while and some comments seem fueled by sales.Besides you dont want me to get mid evil on you.just kidding.I got respect for both you guys but i kinda sense a fued between paolo and treeman-guys chris and mark.It seems if you guys would cooporate maybe yall (texas) could really do something to advance the industry and safety. But hey what the heck do I know

They need a common enemy to bring them closer.

The mickey mouse pulley DOES have an advantage. Yes, your climbing setup gets all squished together, but if you put a sling between you and the hitch, the system is self tailing. Maybe not useful for everyday situations, but there are times when it comes in handy...

I understand your point of view entirely Jimmy.

But just to clarify, if you search all the posts on treemotion and hitch climber, you'll find I have had nothing bad to say about either. In fact if anything the opposite.

Looks like paranoia to me.
