Probably a bit of a stupid thing to do, but I did it anyway. Had a sweetgum at the far end of the back yard that had died last summer in our drought. My son and I started pulling some of the branches with a throw line and at one point hit a crotch that was perfect for pulling the whole tree. Move the fence and cut. As a last minute decision, I thought, better get helmet and glasses. Notch, backcut, perfect except for the 3" 6' long dead branch that broke apparently as the tree passed the tips of the neighboring black gum and launched it back at me. Kask did its job, branch glanced off and thumped my shoulder, so I guess I'll have a pretty good bruise there thanks to plavix, but the alternative was avoided. Moral: always, always ALWAYS wear your PPE.

The thing is, we read or hear about the weekend warrior Bob villa types and think what fools, but the thing is they really don't know any better. My situation would have been classic DIY screws up but for my experience and habit of PPE use.

old oak , it'd take more than a sweet gum branch to crack that skull . Most people shouldn't walk there dog with out a hard hat .

Maybe so Glenn, but I'm not going to test it. I don't want to occupy that little piece of ground I have in northern Huntingdon county by spruce Creek until I am supposed to. Hope all is well with you and your son. Any chance you will join him in charlotte?

You bet! In my city job I have made it part of my regimen to wear hardhat, vest and glasses when I step on anyone's jobs it's regardless of what they are doing. Makes a statement to everyone.
