climbing: how much on rope - how much on spikes?

Reading this thread has reminded me how many more ladders I've seen resting in trees

in adjacent yards this year. Anyone else notice that?

in the uk we only use spikes for take downs, although i have used them on large trees with a poor branch structure that i can use as foot holds but make sure the final prune has no spike marks beyond it. no need to wound them more than we do
