Bootsd are required when doing tree work, either workboots or hikers.
Protective pants are only required when using a saw on the GROUND.

From February to November I wore these Merrell Chameleon Mid and just bought these Thermo 8 Waterproof a week ago - so far they have been great Super traction in snow and in the tree with lots of support for tight branch unions. My first Merrell pair lasted about one year with near every day wear at work. I did use a pair of Redwings for spurs though.
