[Climbers] Any reasons to hold-off (or reconsider) buying an Echo 2511T?

Lol. It's insane, 200Ts are being listed for like $2k on ebay. No idea if they are selling at that price (and I think only a fool would pay it), I got mine for free from a customer :p

The 261 is a common favorite that is available. I love mine, but it's been modded by MasterMind Worksaws.

Wish I'd bought mine that way, I hear they really rip. But even stock it's a great saw, one of my favorite actually.

Here is the 200T I got free, had to clean it up and have like $200 of repair done to it, but it's my primary tree slayer these days:

That’s a pretty awesome gift/tip. I don’t think I’d pay 2k for a 200t, I’d entertain 12-1500 if it was in like new condition with OEM parts…. I paid about 500 for one with a blown motor (unbeknownst to me at time) and probably have about 500 into getting it off the sidelines….. It is a absolute ripper of a saw, and a pleasure to run. I’d choose it over my mildly modded 201t 9/10 times. I’ve run many 201tc and for what ever reason they just seem slow off the starting line, and don’t really have much top end in them…. 200t is like an angry hornet. FWIW I work at altitudes around 7500’-10,000’+.

Yah, the story he told me was that many years ago, when the 200T was still at dealers (somewhere before 2012), he walked in and said "I want to buy the best small chainsaw Stihl makes!" and they sold him this. He only used it to cut a few limbs here and there, I think he lived in the city at the time, then it stopped running for whatever reason, probably just a clogged carb from sitting too long. It sat in his shop for many years, he ended up getting a consumer grade battery chainsaw which he decided was plenty good, then hired me to do some tree work for him years later.

At the end of the day, he said he had a non-working chainsaw sitting around his shop and asked if I wanted it. I was thinking it would be some old saw like an 031 or Farm Boss or something, and was already preparing my polite refusal, so I was quite surprised when he came out with this 200T! I did tell him it was a popular saw among pros, and sent him an update and thank you email once I had a shop get it up and running again.

What sells me on the 2511 is the price point, $540 modded and shipped to my door, the weight (next to nothing pounds), the speed in the cut, and just how nimble of a saw it is.
Who is selling them at that price? Ripsaw wants like $800 but maybe they have different quality builds. Just going 1/4 pitch conversion is going to have me at about $550 and I'd rather keep the tougher 3/8 lp and have more power if that's an option. Maybe on my next 2511t.

Only a fool would pay what rip saws is charging for saws. They are paying porters the generally accepted fair porting price and then reselling the said ported saw for a profit. Why not cut out the overpriced middle man and head over to ope forum and pick a porter for a much more reasonable price?

Not knowing anything about buying modded saws, what is a fair price these days? I've seen that many builders don't do used saws, but are there still builders who I could ship my 200T to and have them port and send it back?

I don't know the price for every saw, but I paid $950 for my 261. Brand new saw plus porting and shipping.

The last saw I had ported was $450 on top of the purchase price (including shipping). It depends on the builder and the saw (some jugs are easier to get into than others). I would imagine you'll be into it ~$300 to $450 if you choose any of the well known builders.

Yeah 300 on the low end and 450 is the most I’d pay. If your looking for a honest builder the best place to do that is ope forum. There is a builder review section. The important thing to realize about that section is the builders DO NOT control the content in that section. Completely the opposite of a medium like YouTube or Facebook.

Be prepared to wait and maybe pay more for the more popular builders.

Makita XCU06T - very small Battery saw that rips for its size. I'm also a featherweight guy and it's a dream having something this light that will blaze through even 6" limbs. And I haven't even done a Panther bar and chain upgrade yet.
I leave my Husqy Li 536t (also battery but 2x the weight) on the ground unless I'm doing a removal.
*I've only used it a few times before getting injured, but Makita bought Dolmar, so I have good expectations long-term.
I tried the makita xcu06t a little over a year ago now and was disappointed with it. The marketing on youtube was very compelling. I don't think 18v is adequate. Returned it to the store after a few days and got a refund. The size and weight are certainly impressive for climbing, but the torque, spin up, and chain speed were not adequate for professional work. I had trouble steering pieces and getting through wood quick enough to make clean cuts. The edges of prune cuts looked like a shredder was used. Chatter. It cuts even worse on small diameter branches where you need a fast chain speed and light pressure. Two of my peers also were excited to try it, but gave it back right away and said "nah". It did fine cutting 2x4s in the yard though. For the price point, it is not a good value (imo) as a professional tool.

It’s mucho better with 1/4 pitch chain.
