Yes, you're right, common sense is the best. My common sense is better after having a jump-tested TIP fail on me when I was about 12-15' off the ground. Now my TIPs are bigger :)

I attended one of Tom's SRT classes. He had the guys establish 3 different climbing stations in 3 trees. After inspecting the setups, Tom asked how many people thought 1 of the 3 was marginal. 1 person raised their hand out of about 15 present. We changed the TIP.

I know one climber who had the line pop out of the ascender when he was simply footlocking as he always did

Now that would be freaky.

Ha! Magic does happen!

we've got this new bit of gear in AUS called a prussik, you guys seen one?

[/ QUOTE ]

Nice...

However, does a prussik have handles for a more ergonomic feel?

Foot lock all the way up to the branch you isolated. Watch the prussik knot open up. Be careful though, it will send you all the way to the ground.

Heck! Even at a TCC someone fell to the ground using the prussik to footlock.--And...while on belay

(Can someone archive that and post it?)

The prussik is not a bullet proof solution. It has a record of opening up and sending someone to the ground too.

Personal preference is what it boils down to. Both mechanical ascenders and purssik knots have their benefits and limitations.

Screw a Kong, I like two Petzls and some athletic tape...

I've side loaded these things like crazy and I can't get the rope to come out. Nice and compact on the harness while working too.

If for some reason I HAD to use the Kong double I'd use something real similar to this to pin the upper holes and keep the rope fair in the groove:

Course, with both of those, you would still need a backup in case the cam failed or something interfered with the function of the cam.

Yup, the clip is the best idea that I've seen, it wasn't my idea, to capture both ropes.

1...Single line may have its place in the profession but it is not the solution to this problem. ...... 2...Any open gate cam is a problem.

[/ QUOTE ]

1. In what way? (I disagree with the statement)

2. In what way, and why do you believe a quick release shelled cam is any better? (I don't think they are an inherent 'problem' or that shelled cams are a solution. Its all down to understanding specific devices, and applying them appropriately with a systems approach.)

Blinky I've got the Petzl's in my bag but have only used them in the backyard. I was thinking of a prussik back up if I was to use them on the job but that looks cool with the double taughtlines as long as they both grabbed... As for the prussik opening up I was taught(and I also taught this when I was an instructor) the 5:1 rule where you go as a maximum 5 times the limb diameter below the limb.

A prussik back up around both lines will not work....put a prussik on your doubled rope and give one leg a pull.

[/ QUOTE ]
Is that because of the spread of the ascenders? The prussik works alone for footlocking so I figured it would work as a back-up...trying to remember Marks talk at TCI but I can't remember what he was recommending...
