Axeknot, are there still remnants of this tree around. Rather than disputing the common name (which you BOTH could be right about) perhaps we can get a positive ID on the culprit.

I saw an article in the paper,

People are apparently sparayinf their trees with fox urine to stop them being swiped come christmas time. Doesn't smell when outside and cold, but warm it up a bit and...

Sorry to hear that after all that work you had to chuck it out.

We use mainly fake trees, plastic has no smell.

we used to do a christmas tree chip-up and the smell of doug fir and grand fir was intoxicating...Grand fir smells even stronger as it is generally sappier. most of the true firs smell similar, I haven't run into any of these piss firs tho, nor do i want to.
 
Cat Spruce

There's a kind of spruce tree here in Maine that people sometimes mistake for a good ol' balsam fir that reeks of cat urine when brought into the house. We call 'em 'cat spruce', of course. Maybe you have a local variation of that?
