Chipper Knives

Been a member to the site for awhile but rarely post, usually just lurk and read. I have an Altec DC 1217. Where is the best place to purchase replacement blades? Is there a better brand than others? I've searched Google and it seems that prices are not consistent, and just wondered what you guys use.

Purchase Magnum, purchase. :)

One brand is a higher quality steel if I understand correctly and one brand is a cheaper steel. What is the high quality brand?

I'll look at my knives when I'm back over to the shop.

Check out the KSBC1 at Treestuff.com... That is what we run... Believe they are made by Knifesource.

Also don't forget new bolts and nuts.. we get them from Fastenal.

If it has been awhile, pull out your anvil and have a look at it, might be time to flip or replace that too. Good square edge on anvil and proper anvil-knife clearance is essential for good performance out of these chippers.

Simonds is the brand made in the USA.

Zenith is the brand that I believe was made in Viet Nam or some such.

Knife installation is enough work to do, double and triple check that I would rather have the best steel in there and it lasting the longest. On their website Simonds talks about damage done when improperly sharpened. In doing that they say just two Rockwell Points higher or lower can have your knives chipping and cracking, or not holding an edge.

Other threads here point in the same direction - American steel and metallurgy for the win.
