DISTRICT FORESTER
The Chicago Park District is looking for a District Forester who, under general direction, will be responsible for managing and coordinating CPD urban forestry operations, including woody plants.
DUTIES:
 Establish policies, guidelines, goals and objectives, standards and performance requirements to sustain a healthy urban forest
 Establish, monitor, and enforce Tree Protection Zones.
 Establish tree planting specifications
 Inspect tree plantings
 Identify hazardous trees
 Monitor tree inventory (GPS)
 Monitor and enforce pesticide license laws
 Liaison/point person for media concerns – Asian Long Horn Beetle, Dutch Elm Disease, Emerald Ash Borer
 Monitor 5-year pruning plan – developing long range tree management requirements including pruning, removal and planting
 Establish specifications for forestry equipment
 Coordinate CPD forestry operations – prioritizing urban forestry functions and activities
 Compile a variety of reports
 Review designs
 Establish educational and training guidelines for employees and develops or helps develop training opportunities, including direct, on the-job training.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or related field plus at least three years of direct field experience in urban forestry and landscape operations, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. LICENSE: Illinois Drivers license preferred. International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
 Knowledge of landscape architecture and of urban forestry principles and practices
 Familiarity with landscape operations including crew sizing, tools, equipment, and safety requirements
 Knowledge of plant pests and diseases and their control through chemical and non-chemical treatments
 Strong leadership and team building and communication skills
 Ability to train staff
