Charly Portoroff's Trolley in Action

Re: Charly Portoroff\'s Trolley in Action

Treejunkie,
I personally prefer that Bobcat over a Dingo. And it can lift a 3' dia x 5' long oak log on level ground.

Re: Charly Portoroff\'s Trolley in Action

A friend of mine has the Toro Dingo. I have only used it a few times, but I was impressed with it. It could pick up anything that weighed less than it does, due to center of gravity issues. However, with three guys putting all their weight on the back of the thing it would pick up some pretty big logs! I think they sell weights that mount on the back just for that purpose. The other nice thing about the dingo is that it fits through most gates, and has a large number of attachments.

Mini-skid steers

Been looking into this for awhile...
The Bobcat MT52 is the newer edition as the MT50 had hydrolic and drive problems. but too wide and long for me to get into the tight back yards that the majority of my work seems to be located.
The overall length is greater than other models. I have based these observations on availability of the units in my area, Calif.
Here is how I see it:
The Kanga is one of the lower priced, stripped down models. But nothing to sneeze at, as it is very reliable. However parts and dealers are still only in far distant to me parts of Calif. In addition other models have better drive pumps and heavier hydrolics. The overall reach is limited and as I want to be able to get logs into the back of my chip body which is fitted onto a F350 this makes it a no for me. Also the hydrolic system delivers a really small Gallons per minute which makes it not work well with hydrolic mower attachments, trenchers etc.
The Toro 'dingo' is very readily available with parts and service being handy. It also comes with a dedicated track drive which I like because of the muddy ground which I seem to always be working around. The reach is there but it is too wide to fit through many gates. And the hydrolic flow is limited
The Vermeer seems to be a good machine but again too wide.
Gravely makes a good unit but the hyd. flow is limited.
Thomas makes a great unit but I dont like the limited hydr. flow. Topnotchtree.com says different than me. Also the cost is very good.
Right now my top choice seems to be the Boxer. boxerok.com. This unit delivers 14gpm hyd flow, is beefy enough for all the attachments AND has a widening track system which means I can work side hill action. A real plus for me because I do alot of work on hills. Also the engine is Honda which to replace it means maybe $1200. at Northern tool and equipment. The unit new is very expensive +/- $20,000. But I have found used units for $11.000

Re: Mini-skid steers

A new Dingo runs about $10K. Center of gravity sucks. It will kick up and smack you in the chin if you're not careful. Not sure of weight but it can handle 1500-2000 lbs if, as stated, the load is centered. /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Charly Portoroff\'s Trolley in Action

by the looks f the rig you could have still used prusick to help keep tension. Maybe using a differt rescue pully one that is shaped more like a bell for tending. And for the prusik release nice effect but also maybe try a micro pully instead of a screw link. The schwabish seems to look when using for climbing cant imagine how the properties of this hitch would effect rigging, Try a valdeton or even a french prusick
