Champion Red Oak Fails

I can imagine why you wanted to fall the spar. Setting chokers and cutting larger wood in spurs can be a pain.

What size crane we're you using?

Did you get some publicity from this job?

Was this a tree/customer you/the company was watching over?

Thanks for the pictures Mark. That was a giant of a tree. Always a shame to see them go. Glad no one was hurt during the fall.

What kind of money did you get to take down such a tree? Or is that a question that's not to be asked on TB? Anyway, that tree was huge.

This was a customer of ours for years. The tree was over 250 yrs. old so to call it mine would be arrogant (right?). We took a huge Tulip down right behind this house maybe 15 yrs. ago and it was one to remember!

No publicity I don't think.

I don't mind. A little over $8K.

Boy that could have been a real disaster if those leads were over the house. So many things went right when they could have gone wrong.

The butt appears to be a number one saw log too. Boy those red oaks do grow to be stately. Beautiful tree.

That was a fat mofo!!

Great job, Mark, and great post. It's nice to see you making an OTJ post, it's been too long. You used to do em all the time, and I believe all of us buzzers appreciate them and want mo!!

Nice job. The big ones are fun once in a while. I thought the bees were pu in there for the BUZZZ

That's what Mark needs for a TB logo, a bad azz wasp or bee decked out in the latest greatest saws and gear, tearing up a big tree like a jack hammer, complete with sawdust flyin and sap a drippin.

Who's got cartoon illustration skills on the forum?

It sure could have Jerry. The one piece of wood we roped off on the first afternoon was only 20' long and weighed almost 3800 lbs. That was just supported by the lower lead. It was very lucky for sure. And once I started removing the tree I found cavities and scalded limbs that weren't present 12 yrs. ago when we pruned it last.

It was a shame to see it go. I love these old and grand trees. It takes so long to get to that point and it feels like some of our memories go with them.

The very end of the trunk actually split into two as we cut it. It was only 8' long or so, but just fell apart! When I was making the face cut it was splintering apart and jamming my saw. Some splinters were nearly 8' long too.
