chainsaw repair manual recs?

As the local saw shop gets further and further behind on repair work while their service seems to be mediocre at best, I'm leaning towards teaching the boys how to do this stuff in-house. Unfortunately, I'm not much of a mechanic myself, so I can't get them very far.

Does anyone have suggestions for a good manual that will teach us to repair 2-cycle equipment? We run both Stihls and Echos, so we need more of a generic guide rather than a saw-specific manual.

Thanks,
k

Go to www.racesaws.com search work saws section for repair information.

I would ask for a few volunteers to research repair manuals they could use.
Let them pick the source and they won’t be using some dumb book the boss picked out.
Their fairly simple ounce you get into them. Good tools help and the basic knowledge of how to remove the clutch and flywheel.
Do you have a saw they can tear down and reassemble?
That’s how I learned.

Thanx for the tip.

I've torn a saw apart and rebuilt it once or twice, but when a saw just won't quite run right I can't always diagnose the problem. I'm thinking about a text for a 2-cycle repair class or something along that line--step-by-step instructions to diagnose & repair, not a couple of diagrams that explode out the parts list.

I don't even know what model of saw you are refering to.However if you keep an eye out on both http://gypoclimber.com/index.php and http://www.racesaws.com/ I will be doing a complete rebuid on a Stihl 038 magnum as well as a porting job in the near future.

If you are a novice as you stated, ignore the porting portion and just injest the basics. If you do a search on both sites you might be able to find some threads from the past where myself and others have submitted pictorial presentations of rebuilds.

To add also ,carb rebuild info can be obtained on line by going to whatever make of carb's website you are dealing with .They are all good about tutorials.

i half wrote a chainsaw manual for my last company, but things with them went south and i never finished it for them, we had a sort of bitter falling out, anyways, if i can get it online, i'll share it with you.
otherwise you can download specific stihl saw manuals from tradebit, maybe echo too, not sure though.. http://www.tradebit.com/filesharing.php/1003-Documents-eBooks-Technical/18
i used it for a ms440 i was working on and it was pretty helpful
and if you download it there, you save paper!

good luck!

Sounds like you need service manuals, step by step how to's and trouble shooting. There is disc out there of different makers of saws on Ebay for about $10. It will save you from spending $20+ for each service manual.
