Chainsaw hook

I had my Echo walk out of the boat snap on my harness a couple of times while climbing through canopy. This has never happened to me with a carabiner. I now use a Petzl Spirit keylock straight gate carabiner to attach my ms200 to the ring on my harness. The keylock is important because carabiners with a pin and notch catch the ring when removed one-handed.

If anyone would like a hook or lanyard like the ones featured in Ekkas vidio I can bring some with me to Minneapolis. They are produced by a friend of mine here in Victoria. There are several different models of lanyards and two different hook sizes, I will post a photo of the one I use. Everyone over here uses and loves these lanyards, they are far superior to anything else on the market

In '98 I was working on the ground for a climber in The Netherlands while he was doing a crane removal of a huge London Plane. He was in the upper third (about 70 feet up) of this tree and let his saw swing off his belt after making a horizontal, anti-gravity cut. His snap opened and the saw, a Stihl 046, free-fell away still running. I watched it plummet towards the castle-like home where we were working. It went through the mesh wired glass sunroof, through the old floor and stopped in the basement knocking over a couple of open, half full paint tins and narrowly missing the painter! And it was still running and completely intact. Could have been way more serious.

I clip my saw lanyard to a metal loop on my belt via a small carabiner (not meant for weight over 150 lbs) and then clip the ring on the lanyard to my belt snap if I need to reign the saw in for climbing purposes. Learn by watching others!

This is what i use,

big komet hook to snap that steel ring, and also bigger saws handles direct. On bigger saws i usually dont use a lanyard.

and see, i wear my saw (almost) center at the back plate /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I use the Komet hook. Make sure you position it well and check it regularly (which w'all do, anyways, right?). If it folds the webbing the wrong way it takes ages to get the 'memory' out of the webbing to hold it right. Of course, keeping the belt absolutely flat is much better.

Yes, the philosophy of having the hook tear away has saved me some trouble in a time. Let the lanyard do its work.

I put pear-shaped carabiners on both ends of a 40-something inch break-away lanyard, strapping one end to the left loop in the rear of a Bfly-II. I used to direct attach it (via webbing loop) to my climbing saw but it got in the way when using the saw on the ground and then I'd need one per saw.

The extra length with the biner on the belt hook puts the saw lower on my hip. It seems to be more accessible, contrary to my previous thoughts on adding it there. More distance between me and the occasional kiss of the muffler.

"More distance between me and the occasional kiss of the muffler. "

Ha ha ha!!!

Do you remember how you would laugh at me when the Poulan 25 muffler would bite my thigh in the summer? It was real funny to hear that unique yelp wasn't it? That was until YOU got your first 'muffler bite'...then I got to laugh! A right of passage of sorts...

I've had many a bite like that, except when the muffler would fall off. Then I'd just go deaf!

So what does a muffler bite on the thigh look like? A hickey?

It it's summertime and pants are sweat soaked the muffler bite will steam a burn into your thigh, complete with the holes and bolt head :)

Yep, there 's a real talent there not being utilised.

If there was a position for 'International Extension Officer' for the tree care industry, Ekka should have it!

I use Black Diamond 'Ice clippers', and a cresto tearaway bungee lanyard - guaranteed to fail at 200kg, not under not over. And the ring sits right against the handle, which would make for quicker clipping onto Ekka's hooks. With a 338, it also allows the saw to sit tight and comfy against the arse with the muffler away, no sharp angles or spinning.

Meaning no love bites from the muffler! /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The only time I've been burned by the muffler is handling the saw, never by it hanging, did those Poulans have the muffler sticking out or something?

Yeah, the ring is on the lanyard and the hook or snap is on your saddle.

However, my harness has 2 D's on each side and you can buy bungee lanyards with a biner instead of a rind and clip the saw to your 2nd D.

Also, I suppose, it depends on what you do a lot of. I do a lot of palms, so I want to easily pick up my saw with one hand and put it back down with one hand ... coz when you are at the head of the palm there's a little crop of cutting to be done. In a tree it's less critical as generally you have to move about a bit for each cut.
