Can I function with just a cell phone?

It's time to upgrade my laptop. That puts me at a split in the road it seems. What happens on the other side of the keyboard is a mystery to me.

This isn't about operating system competition. I'm content with Apple and that won't change. Its about hardware.

Here's what I have now:

Laptop with internal cd/dvd
External wireless keyboard
External, larger, monitor
Mobile phone

What all this looks like to me:

Thumb typing and a small screen
Portability

vrs.

Potential dual use tool with a rat's nest of wires at home.

Is there a compelling reason not to live a totally mobile life?

For word processing and the like, certainly worth a try. Can also print from phone right? I know I can on Android...I've gotta assume Apple would support that.

I assume you'll use the wireless keyboard with the phone (bluetooth?) and mirror image from phone to monitor?

I'm not sure you need a USB hub except to charge things?

Bluetooth keyboard (just need wire available to charge it)

Monitor - some are wireless, but if you already have one that is not and it has an HDMI port, you can get Apple TV, Chromecast (I assume that will work wth Apple?) or the easiest/cheapest may be an Amazon Firestick for $25. Plug that into the HDMI port and a power source. Then you hold down the "home" button, go over to screen mirroring then go to the phone and tell it to mirror to the Firestick. I'm not an Apple guy, so I don't know what it is called on an iPhone - Samsung calls it "Smartview"....I tap that on my phone when the Firestick is waiting for a signal and whatever I am looking at on my phone shows up on the screen.

You could still just use the touch screen on the phone instead of a mouse when you need to tap/select. I don't know how a bluetooth mouse would work with a phone???

I ran into trouble with certain online portals without a laptop/desktop computer.
If you are using Chrome browser, you can click on the dots in upper right hand corner and check the box next to "Desktop Site". The page reloads as it looks and behaves on a laptop/desktop.

Some secure portals still recognize the device and will not work. I’ve experienced it with testing sites as well as employer sites.

@Tom Dunlap that's a pretty new trick for an old dog. Appreciate your trailblazing nature.

I'm all mobile except for estimates/proposals. You'll never see me on treebuzz on a laptop. Well, you'll never see me on treebuzz at all unless you get back down here in January for the comp in Windermere and see my thumbs on my phone...

@Crimsonking Does that happen often? I haven't come across this happening using my cell..at least not yet? Is there an example you could share?

It’s not often, but often enough for me to pivot back to having a laptop. My insurance licensing software (when working as an agent) required a non-mobile platform. The company I’m currently working with (a national brand) has an on boarding platform that is non-mobile. Upcoming certs may have the same issue, but thankfully, my father-in-law just gave us a laptop that he never uses.

My position is, if you have friends or library access, then go all-mobile, and use those computers if necessary. It’s rare that I’ve had a problem, but it’s worth knowing when making this decision. For me, it’s better to have both options, as time somewhere else is time away from my family.

@colb you go to geezers/legends. Who might you be? I go most years.

I'm the guy trying not to get disqualified, lol. I just competed for my first time this year. Made it through gear check with only two pieces cordially mugged off me. I got stuck on my hitch during a work climb because my friction was different on my mug-altered system, and I also had to fiddle with a loaner piece of equipment (also the result of being mugged during gear check...) during my aerial rescue... Frickin' Flint was in my group, so that was great to have him show how I was *supposed* to do everything... My kit is so not optimized for comp climbing. Totally had fun and want to go this coming year - see if I can improve, you know. I learned so much.

I will be there this Jan. Flint is a stepper. He just turned 40....hope to meet you. I am 52. My group is usually the same every year. I missed this year though. I am always mid pack or a touch under. Always some fuck up in 2 events. Maybe I can get it together this year. Get in the top 10. If there are 45 climbers I break under 20. But damn would be nice to step up a bit.....
