Q. Lobata, 10 foot dia, 163 feet tall, 100 foot spread. The tree would've had more spread had some numb-nut not cut some limbs off it years ago. But still a most impressive oak nonetheless.
Looks like it had some HUGE tears towards the bottom.
I wonder of those limbs could have been saved by some weight reduction. Too bad...Would have been some incredible limb walks to be had in a tree like that.
Is that near Covelo Jerry? I think it's the same tree that is in James Balog's book Tree: A new Vision of the American Forest. That's an amazing tree. The only broadleaf trees that I've seen even close to the same league are some local Cottonwoods, but most of them are broken and dying.
Thanks for posting, that's one of the most imposing looking trees I have ever seen!
The tree is in Covelo, Gord. Average height for a mature Q Lobata is about 100' It's clear that tree put more of its energy into growing tall. The primary spars says it was reaching for the sky at a very young age. Usually indicative of growing in a forest environment. Today the tree is in the open, but when it was young and reaching for the sky it probably was competing with some closer neighbors.
