Cable winch on Bandit 1590

Anyone else have the cable winch on their chipper with the skidder style choker setup? How do I shorten it up a couple inches past the part that's frayed? Has a fat piece of metal on the end that the cable looks like its crimped inside of.

It is crimped inside that knob. So it's either cut it and use clamps of some sort, or take it to someplace that has a crimper and can put a new stopper knob on it further up. Logging supply house, logging equipment dealer, wire rope/rigging supply house, etc.

Brazing would leave cable stronger I think.

Also if you wanted a cleaner look that piece of metal on the end (nuben?) can be had in a two or three piece unit that has the outer metal collar with a tapered inside near where cable slips through and then a one or two piece wedge that forces cable out into that to lock it up tighter as more force is applied.

We've chipped worse.:frenetico:

Several times. :muyenojado:

It's not half as bad as you might think. Those deep chip pockets on the larger diameter drums will hold all sorts of stuff easily. Only ruined 1 chipper knife so far, with a 1" horseshoe piece missing from the cutting edge where it ate the 17 ton screw shackle.

Train everyone in Stop, Drop, And....

If those ends ever get sucked into the chipper lots of extras will be coming out.;)
Our SOP is that the winch line is attached to a log or put away if the feed wheels are going. With that simple rule, you will never have a line sucked in with hardware on the end.

Ahh,....good idea. I like 'rules' that way. If you always follow 'this rule' that negative thing won't happen.

I'm always surprised at how many people don't like intelligent 'rules'.

Used quick-fix choker knobs lots when I worked in the woods. Don't know if you can find one's that are small enough. End the suffering and cut it in the middle and order the Amsteel!

I bought the hardware on the no knot winch that tree stuff sells. This is hands down the way to go for winch lines/hardware. Dummy proof. I already had a nice amsteel line so I found another vendor to sell the hardware. Check out the tree stuff link.

What's the point of this extra hardware? Put a hook on the end of the line and clip it over the line to choke the log. Why spend money for extra hardware to complicate things. I don't get it.

I found the gates on the clips always getting bent off. No matter how many times I told the guys how to orient the gate, they would break them off. You can still use a snap without the gate but its not as easily used unless constant tension is kept on the line.

Whats with all the extra hardware? I already had the amsteel line so I added this hardware for around $30. It didn't break the bank...
